Jets' Chris Baker hurts back

Chris Baker hurt his back and will not play during the opening day of training camp on Thursday.

Tight end Chris Baker, who made a pay-me-or-trade-me demand last month in minicamp, won't be in uniform when the Jets open training camp Thursday at Hofstra. Baker, bothered by a sore back, was placed Monday on the physically-unable-to-perform list. That means he can't practice until he passes the team physical. The injury isn't believed to be serious, fueling speculation it was a punitive move by the Jets. Not so, according to a person familiar with the team's thinking.

Curiously, Team Baker was quiet on the move, as his agent, Jonathan Feinsod, declined to comment. One NFL source believes Baker could be backing down from his demands because he senses the Jets have gained the upper hand in the dispute. As long as Baker is on the PUP list, the Jets aren't obligated to pay his base salary ($683,000). If they cut him, he'd receive nothing.

According to the team, Baker, who caught a career-high 41 passes last season, checked into camp Sunday, the reporting date for injured players and quarterbacks. Baker, who played last season with a bad back, said last month that he "tweaked something" in minicamp. He was fined $3,000 for skipping a mandatory treatment session, adding more bad blood to the situation. Prior to that, he blasted the organization for reneging on a promise to renegotiate his contract. He's expected to address the media Thursday. He lost some leverage when the Jets drafted tight end Dustin Keller in the first round.
