Kentucky Jet
May 17, 2010, 6:10 am Clausen and the Problem of Picking Second-Round Quarterbacks By LUIS DELOUREIRO Luis DeLoureiro is building a better passer rating, among other statistical pursuits, at NFLStatAnalysis.net: A couple of weeks ago, Jimmy Clausen waited until well into the second round to hear his name called in the N.F.L. draft, by the Carolina Panthers. With a few exceptions, players selected in the second round are expected to be starters sooner rather than later. The Panthers probably shouldn
Bruce Banner
Chad Henne and Kevin Kolb are the only ones who are starters with the teams that drafted them. The writer tries to make second round QBs sound worse than they really are by making a big deal out of playing for the team that drafted you. Brees and Favre are dominant QBs, case closed. #27TheDominator
The issue is that QB is not like other positions. You can be a middle of the road DT or OG and have some value. You can be a WR or RB that shows flashes, but is usually mediocre and have some value. QB is more black and white. You are good or you are pretty much useless. It seems that teams used to agree with this theory because no 2nd rounders were picked from 2001 to 2006. The rest of those guys are just getting to the point where they should be starting to contribute. If Henne and Kolb turn out the point is disproved. The guy's stat would be 3 out of 11 -Kolb, Brees and Henne and even he'd admit you can't count White or Claussen yet. If you are going to go with the old ones you'd have to count Slash and Jake as positives. What do you think the percentage is on 1st round QBs over the same time period? Besides, I hear Quincy Carter had a hell of an arena career.
