CORTLAND — The Jets must have felt like conquering heroes when they pulled into Cortland today.

The two team buses were greeted by 1,500 green-and-white dressed fans cheering wildly with chants of “J-E-T-S” for their arrival to start training camp.

It’s the second year for the Jets in their upstate New York home.

“What a difference a year makes,” coach Rex Ryan said to the fans. “Last year we came here and because of the support that we had and the way community in Cortland here welcomed us is probably the biggest reason we came back. We really appreciate it you guys showing these new guys we got our draft picks right.”

Ryan insisted when he became head coach that the team go away for parts of training camp and went with the upstate town.

“It was a huge factor in the success we had last year,” Ryan said of the squad that lost in the AFC Championship game to the Colts last year.

“We really came together as a team starting here in Cortland. Our goals remain the same. Last year, we had a goal to win a Super Bowl and we fell a little bit short. I have a funny feeling there’s a few more believers than were here last year. We are going to try and bring it home to our fans. We had every single player pass our conditioning test, now we have to pass the physical test and that begins tomorrow.”

The Jets will hold team meetings tonight and hit the field tomorrow with the cameras rolling.

“This year we have Hard Knocks and NFL Films, so the now the country gets to see how special this place is,” Ryan said.
