Nutter sets 2 p.m. snow emergency in Philly

Associated Press • December 26, 2010

PHILADELPHIA — Mayor Michael Nutter has announced that the city of Philadelphia is declaring a snow emergency as of 2 p.m. today, and he urged residents to stay off the roads as a major winter storm bore down on the region.

Nutter said the storm moving up the coast is expected to bring 8 to 12 inches of snow to the city, and perhaps even more, and strong winds would be make the situation dangerous into the evening.

"We are urging all Philadelphians, please be careful, please be safe," the mayor told reporters in a news conference at City Hall this morning.

A snow emergency bars parking on roads designated snow emergency routes. The mayor said people who need to get out to shop or to travel on the holiday weekend should do so early, before the snow arrives.

"Shoppers, travelers, city residents, take advantage of an early start, because the snow will be coming shortly; when it happens, it will hit very hard," Nutter said.

Anyone planning on going to the Philadelphia Eagles game still scheduled tonight urged to take mass transit, and extra trains were scheduled on the main route to the stadium in South Philadelphia, officials said.

When did BP get elected governor of PA?

Funny how the outgoing governor indirectly took a dump on the Philly mayor.

Also, his comparison to China is just stupid. The Chinese let 2 million people die because of poor government response to a river flooding, so they're really not something to emulate.
