Those of us who remember Kotite's 2 Tight end offense, Vance Joseph, and Everett McIver deserve this....

The Jets came two wins short of a championship, but they're still one of the best in sports, according to Sports Business Journal.

SBJ announced its nominations Monday for best professional sports team, and the Jets were one of the five finalists. The others: Ganassi Racing, the Orlando Magic, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Francisco Giants.

The Jets truly have become a national team, thanks in large part to its summer-long run on HBO's "Hard Knocks." They took some criticism for agreeing to take part in the reality series -- remember all the talk about potential distractions? -- but it turned out to be a brilliant decision in terms of marketing the Jets' brand.

That said, the SBJ nomination is a bit curious, considering the number of embarrassing off-the-field issues -- the Ines Sainz locker-room incident, Braylon Edwards' DWI arrest, the Sal Alosi tripping debacle and Rex Ryan's personal life. Are we missing any? It's hard to keep track of them all.

The awards recognize excellence and outstanding achievement in the business of sports for the period from March 1, 2010 through February 28, 2011.

The New Meadowlands Stadium received some SBJ love in the sports-facility-of-the-year category. Also nominated are the Amway Center, Arrowhead Stadium, Consol Energy Center, Red Bull Arena and Target Field.

The awards will be presented May 18 in Manhattan. It won't have the cache of the ESPYs, but then again, who does?

Wow. This would be even better than another offseason championship.

So Woody achieved some sort of excellence in sports business? I wonder if mandatory furloughs are taken into account as a brilliant business strategy.

Best team = Lombardi Trophy

This is not about "team" as "team" connotes competition, and immediately makes one think of on-the-field accomplishments. 2 AFC Championship losses in a row is meh...

However, that said, the off-the-field accomplishment that I've notice and that makes the Jets one of the "Best Franchises" is that they have become (as the author points out) a global brand. From a business standpoint this is a remarkable accomplishment, given 5+ years ago the fanbase was a bunch of LI and Jersey hooligans, and not much more...

I applaud Woody for his role in making the Jets a banner brand in the NFL universe... now I'd just like to see a championship to go alongside the branding kudos.

Packers were the best team last year honestly...pretty sure they were never behind in any game this season (not sure though). And the Magic weren't the best NBA team last year, the Lakers were.

Are you saying the Packers went undefeated last year? They were never down by more than seven if that's what you're getting at.
