This caveat needs to die. A good QB is a good QB is a good QB, system be damned.

They have strengths and weaknesses. Each QB has different tools.

Example: Big Ben is not the best in general, but he's great when the pocket breaks down and he can create on his own.

On the other hand, Tom Brady is amazing, far better than Big Ben. If you give him time, you're dead. But if the pocket collapses on him, it's easy to get in his head and he's not effective.

Some QB's have a gun for an arm. Alex Smith is not one of them.  However, he makes good choices fast so he's great in the short game.

I understand that every good QB doesn't have the same skillset. Mornhinweg or any "WCO" coordinator (so everyone) would run the offense with Roethlisberger or Brady. It's all about the personnel. The Chiefs have some guys who can make plays with the ball so Smith just has to be able to get first downs and get the ball into the hands of Charles/Bowe/Baldwin/McLuster/Moeaki. He's capable of doing that and even that task, which sounds so simple and easy to do but isn't, might be beyond what Reid thinks a rookie QB will do. It's also easier to break in a #1 overall LT than it is to bring in a #1 overall QB for where the Chiefs are at offensively. Top ranked LT prospects have been a pretty safe, basic top pick for teams. The Chiefs are basically hoping to get average to above average QB for a couple of years and only pay with 2013 picks to do it.

I might have thought the Jets would be interested in Smith but they probably want someone who can be a long term solution. Plus he's got Pennington-itis and that wouldn't go over well here.
