Greenseed4
The 49ers and Chiefs have completed a trade for Alex Smith. Four years after trading for the Patriots' backup quarterback, the Chiefs have swung a deal for the man who lost his job to Colin Kaepernick. New coach Andy Reid has paid a pretty penny for his starting quarterback as the Chiefs will reportedly send a second-round pick to the Niners in this April's draft and a "similar" pick in the 2014 draft. It's the same kind of price that the Cardinals paid for Kevin Kolb in 2011 and the Chiefs paid for Matt Cassel in 2009. Smith is certainly an upgrade on Cassel, but has proven to be incapable of anything more than game managing fort he Niners. Under Reid's pass-happy West Coast scheme, he'll be asked to do a lot more. The deal won't be official until the new league year opens on March 12. (Rotoworld's take)

CrazyCarl40
Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter Goes without saying but Chiefs now expected to release QB Matt Cassel, who will have a market for his services. Alex Smith is pretty much Matt Cassell, except a little younger. Both guys who looked good because of the system. No Matt Cassell here, thanks. bitonti
the real fall out here is that the Niners are one of the few teams with the picks necessary to actually make a run at Revis.

Skeet Ulrich
What a horrible deal for the Chiefs. Not only do you surrender a high 2nd rounder and a high second day pick next year, you're also locked into having Smith as your QB for the next ~3 years. Bingo. They've got 15 picks in the upcoming draft plus a gaping hole at CB.
F.Chowds
Report: Chiefs giving up a 2013 second and change for Alex Smith Posted by Darin Gantt on February 27, 2013, 12:22 PM EST AP The Chiefs apparently have their quarterback now, but they paid a handsome price for him. According to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, the 49ers will get a second-round pick this year and “a similar pick in the 2014 draft” in exchange for quarterback Alex Smith. That’s a haul for the 49ers, who have more draft picks than will ever make their roster this year (which could put them in prime position to make a run at disgruntled Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis). Paying that kind of price also speaks to the Chiefs figuring out a deal to extend Smith, since that kind of price for two years seems excessive. Matt39
Revis to SF makes sense, but is Revis willing to play a season as a rental on his current deal? SF doesnt have the pockets right now to dole out a huge contract to a CB with all the impact guys they already have that are on rookie deals. Paying that kind of price also speaks to the Chiefs figuring out a deal to extend Smith, since that kind of price for two years seems excessive. This is shaping up nicely. If Alex Smith netted these picks, I can only imagine what Revis could command via trade. I've maintained all along, Revis is a luxury for us. We aren't a competitive team, and if trading him loads the new GM and scouting department with a litany of picks for 2013 and 2014 then you have to go for it, our team unfortunately has far too many holes in it not to leverage the one angle we have towards fixing things. You part ways with Revis, as great as he is, because the team is more important than the player.
