Sources: White Sox to deal Rowand for Phillies' ThomeESPN.com news services

According to major-league baseball sources, the White Sox and the Phillies are on the verge of a deal that would send center fielder Aaron Rowand to the Phillies for first baseman Jim Thome. The deal is expected to include major cash considerations due to the size of Thome's contract.

Thome, 35, is due about $12.5 million in 2006 and $14 million in each of the final two seasons of his six-year contract. The Phillies have a club option for 2009, and he has a no-trade clause.

The four-time All-Star hit .207 with seven homers and 30 RBI in 59 games this year before having season-ending surgery on his right elbow in August. Thome has 430 homers since making his major-league debut in 1991.

Aaron Rowand had signed a contract with the White Sox in January that guaranteed the center fielder $8.5 million over the next three seasons.

Rowand, 28, set career highs in 2004 by hitting .310 with 38 doubles, 24 homers and 69 RBIs.

Eligible for salary arbitration for the first time after making $340,000 in 2004, he earned $2 million in 2005 and is expected $3.25 million in 2006. Chicago has a club option for 2007 at $5 million and Rowand holds a player option for 2007 at $3.25 million

I think it was just sound GMing by Williams.

They have a CF ready to step in next year or in 07.

They also can still be players in the Pierre sweepstakes and a CF should be easier to obtain than a 1st baseman would have been with Delgado off the market and the chance Konerko ends up elsewhere.

If Konerko signs with the WSox they have the DH to play Thome at. If Konerko doesn't sign they can attempt to bring Frank Thomas back.

Thome has had this back issue for a couple of seasons now. I wonder if he really is on the downside of his career.

If that's the case, and they lose Paul, then Williams blew it. In short, this deal will be a plus or a hugh minus. No middle ground here.
