Airball against Giants puts Jets' Schott in firing line

Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer may be coaching for his job this week.

The Jets are now 27th in the NFL in total offense and looked like a complete mess on Saturday against the Giants. They attempted 68 passes (59 attempts, 5 sacks, 4 scrambles) and just 25 rushes.

Schottenheimer’s contract runs through 2013, but if the Jets are looking for someone to pay should they miss the playoffs, he would be the most likely candidate. Head coach Rex Ryan is not going anywhere and they are not giving up on quarterback Mark Sanchez.

The Jets offense has struggled to find an identity all season. They began the year throwing the ball, went back to the run and then Saturday threw more than they have in years.

The worst series of the day came with 5:39 to play and the Jets trailing 20-14. Schottenheimer called three straight passes — two were incompletions and one ended in a sack.

Sanchez defended Schottenheimer.

“When we got the ball back with five minutes left, people are saying, ‘Why don’t you run the ball? Why don’t you run the ball?’ ” Sanchez said. “It’s easy to say that now, but we had just driven the ball all the way down the field throwing the heck out of it. We were going with what was working. If you look back, who knows what could have happened if we kept running, but that’s not fair. That’s not fair to Schotty. I thought he called a great game. We just didn’t execute the plays that were called.”

* The NFL will not investigate the postgame confrontation between Ryan and Giants running back Brandon Jacobs. So Ryan, who was fined $75,000 last month for yelling a profanity at a fan, does not have to worry about another fine.

* Ryan built up the Jets-Giants game into a huge rivalry, but several Jets players said they did not buy into that.

“There’s no rivalry if you play them once every four years,” linebacker Calvin Pace said. “This ain’t Ohio State-Michigan. Once every four years, they’re just the next team on the schedule. I never really got what this [stuff] was all about.”

* Jets center Nick Mangold took the blame for the botched snap to Sanchez in the fourth quarter that resulted in a fumble the Giants recovered in the end zone.

“I’ve got to get the ball to Mark and I didn’t, so I failed,” Mangold said.

It appeared Mangold hit his leg with the snap, sending the ball into the end zone.

I swear to me it almost FEELS like the players are sabotaging the season to help facilitate the process of getting Schottenheimer fired. Who doesn't think that Holmes and Burress have looked disinterested and partly disgusted after every one of the seemingly countless 3 and outs we've had to endure watching week in and week out?

Yesterday Southern Jet and I were talking on Twitter and he told me a friend of his was right behind the Jets bench the other day and Bart Scott and Sanchez were yelling and cursing at each other with Scott saying "why'd you go away from what was working? and Sanchez was telling him to STFU. I asked SJ why was Scott complaining to Sanchez, HE'S not the one calling the plays-he should have been in (The Boy Wonder who is NEVER at fault because "he called a GREAT game" according to Rex and Sanchez): Brian Schottenheimer's face.

just stop it

It's not like we haven't seen teams quit before Larz-we see it every year, players playing out the string just hoping nobody gets hurt and saying "Maybe next year". We saw it Herm's last year here when the defense couldn't stop anybody or get off the field. We were letting our opponents control the ball 40 minutes a game. We saw it during Mangini's last year too with Favre that whole December culminating down in Miami. You see it now on the faces on the sidelines of guys like Burress and Bart Scott...they look disinterested and frustrated

Jim -- I like Southern Jet a lot. He is a GOOD dude. Really like him.

That said, please do not ever believe him. He is full of crap, lol. His friend heard what was being said? lol....

He had the scoop on Cowher several times, he had the scoop on Julius Peppers. Except none of those things ever happened. Do not believe what Incarcerated SJ tells you, :)/

And SJ -- exhale man. The Jets did not tank to get Schotty fired.

Each Jets player makes more money by being in the playoffs. With roster turnover being what it is in the NFL, there are no guarantees that a lot of the players will be back next year. They wanted to win. They just stunk.

I will say this though Maxman, football is entertainment and as a performer I know that when you are working in a situation where you're not happy at your job that your performance suffers-it's human nature-you don't sing as hard-you don't call the plays where you HAVE to put out a hundred %-you just don't try as hard.

my apologies sofla

my nerves are still a bit raw.

we both saw the same things, passes bouncing off guys facemasks and both palms, false starts, turnovers, etc etc we just came to different conclusions. I have no way of saying my conclusion is right (I was thinking more along the lines of hangover)

peace bro
