CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A few takeaways from Tuesday's New York Jets practice:

Game prep: The Jets open the preseason in two days, at home against the Indianapolis Colts, so this was more of a regular-season practice than training camp. The first- and second-team offenses and defenses worked against scout teams, practicing plays they might run in the game. Rex Ryan said the defense does virtually no game-plan prep for the first preseason game; the offense will have a scaled-back game plan.

QB update: Sorry, folks, no quarterback stats, as Geno Smith and Michael Vick worked against the scout-team defense at three-quarters speed. Vick got a few reps with the starters, and he will get at least one series with the starters in the game, according to Ryan.

Medical update: Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley(illness) missed practice, but he should be fine for Thursday night. ... Rookie safety Calvin Pryor, coming off a concussion, worked with the scout team. He won't play against the the Colts, Ryan said. ... Running back Bilal Powell (hamstring) returned to practice on a limited basis and could play. Ditto, cornerback Johnny Patrick (hamstring). ... Tackle Brent Qvale(concussion) sat out. ... Rookie wide receiver Shaq Evans (shoulder) could be done for the season. He has a "severe" injury, Ryan said.

Patterson Island (not): Even though it was a relatively low-key practice, Ryan wasn't happy with cornerback Dimitri Patterson, whom they're counting on to replace Antonio Cromartie. "It looked like he wasn't doing much because he gave up a bunch of completions," Ryan said. "I was like, 'Dimitri, we have to tighten up a little bit over there.'" Patterson is nursing ankle and calf injuries. Ryan suspects that Patterson, like a lot of veterans, is pacing himself through camp.

Practice highlights: Take it with a grain of salt because it wasn't a typical practice, but ... Smith threw a 40-yard touchdown to Eric Decker, who beat rookie cornerback Brandon Dixon. ... Running back Chris Johnson was stricken with a case of the dropsies, dropping the ball on consecutive pass plays -- on the same exact route. ... Willie Colon and Brian Winters were the starting guards. It looks like they'll start against the Colts.
