You should TRY IT sometime: 2019 free agency: 6 perfect matches for the New York Jets By: Sam Neumann | 8 hours ago After the NFL combine in Indianapolis commences, the Jets, like every other team, will enter free agency looking for the right fits. New York currently has the second most available cap space in the NFL after cutting Spencer Long and will continue to see open space grow after they part ways with Isaiah Crowell. The Jets have a long laundry list of needs and with an abundance of cap space and two rounds without draft picks, a lot of the work will be done in free agency. Let’s take a look at six perfect matches for the Jets in free agency. RB Tevin Coleman, Atlanta Falcons Atlanta Falcons running back Tevin Coleman (26) breaks a tackle by New York Jets free safety Marcus Maye (26) during the fourth quarter at MetLife Stadium. (Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports) Tevin Coleman is set to hit the open market and will be looking for a home where he can be the starting running back, instead of splitting carries with Devonta Freeman. Le’Veon Bell is the more complete free agent back, but Coleman will demand less money and allow the Jets to allocate funds elsewhere. Coleman, who will be just 26 in April, was a key contributor in multiple playoff trips for the Falcons, including Super Bowl 51. He has a career 2,340 rushing yards with 18 rushing touchdowns. As a dual-threat back, Coleman has 92 receptions for 1,010 yards and 11 touchdowns. For Sam Darnold, Coleman would be the perfect back out of the backfield. Not only as a capable runner, who has averaged 4.4 yards per carry for his career, but as a threat in the passing game as well. Coleman presents less of a distraction while being able to provide similar production as Bell. Page 2 LB Anthony Barr, Minnesota Vikings Minnesota Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr (55) reacts after making a play during the third quarter against the Green Bay Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium. (Harrison Barden-USA TODAY Sports) Henry Anderson is unlikely to be retained by the Jets, as they will switch to a 4-3 scheme under new DC Gregg Williams. The Jets will need a 4-3 defensive end that can put his hand in the dirt and get after the quarterback. Anthony Barr would be the perfect fit for the Jets off of the edge. Barr was Pro Football Focus’ 18th-highest-graded linebacker against the run last season and his presence would help immensely next to Leonard Williams. The four-time Pro Bowler is set to become an unrestricted free agent and seemed to be not utilized properly in Minnesota. A match between a player with a lot of talent looking for a change of scenery and a team that needs an edge rusher makes too much sense. Page 3 WR Adam Humphries, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Adam Humphries (10) runs past Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brian Poole (34) after a catch during the second half at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. (Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports) The Jets are in need of a slot receiver and Adam Humphries immediately fills that hole. Quincy Enunwa would move to the slot if the Jets were to acquire a vertical threat on the outside, but he can mix and match and complement Humprhries. Traditional slot receivers like Humphries are starting to rule the NFL — see New England’s Super Bowl MVP, Julian Edelman. Humphries set career highs in receptions and receiving yards in 2018 with the Buccaneers going through a quarterback carousel. The 26-year-old has been mostly healthy, as injury concerns arise with the position. With this signing, the Jets would find a perfect match for Darnold in the slot. Page 4 DT Grady Jarrett, Atlanta Falcons The Jets offensive line will have its work cut out against Grady Jarrett and the Falcons defense. (Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports) Grady Jarrett is the interior force that the Jets have been missing since Damon Harrison switched locker rooms at MetLife Stadium. Jarrett finished the 2018 season with career highs in both sacks and forced fumbles. The 25-year-old out of Clemson is set to hit the free agent market and the Jets have an opening in the middle with Steve McLendon likely leaving this offseason. If the Jets want to bulk up their defensive line to improve their pass-rush and run-defense, Jarett is a good start, but the Jets are going to need to fill out their 4-3 with capable edge rushers first. OLB Dante Fowler, Los Angeles Rams New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) hands off as Los Angeles Rams linebacker Dante Fowler (56) defends during the first quarter in Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. (Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports) The Jets have been heavily linked to Dante Fowler since the 2018 trade deadline when New York came close to pulling the trigger on a deal for the former Jaguar. Fowler helped the Rams reach the Super Bowl and finally looked like an elite pass-rusher with a change of scenery. The former third overall pick is only 24. In eight games with the Rams, Fowler finished with 21 tackles, two sacks, a pass defended and a forced fumble. Fowler fills a huge need and would fit like a glove in the Jets’ 4-3 scheme. Page 3 of 3 CB Bryce Callahan, Chicago Bears New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard (87) can’t catch a pass against Chicago Bears cornerback Bryce Callahan (37) during overtime at MetLife Stadium. (Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports) Cornerback is an underrated need for the Jets going into 2019. Morris Claiborne, Buster Skrine and Darryl Roberts are all set to become free agents. The Jets are going to need an outside cornerback, but that need will probably be filled during draft weekend. With the Jets starting nickel corner becoming a free agent and New York seemingly not ready to hand the keys to Parry Nickerson to man the slot, Bryce Callahan makes a lot of sense for Gang Green. In a season cut short due to injury, Callahan racked in two sacks and two interceptions. The Jets have enough money to go around for a lot of needs and their secondary would look immensely better with Callahan in it.
