Colts: Vandy on way out

February 27, 2006 11:08 AM ET

The News

The Colts won't have Mike Vanderjagt to kick around anymore, as the eight-year veteran place-kicker will likely be wearing a new uniform next fall. "In our minds, we are looking," team president Bill Polian told the Indianapolis Star. "Mike will be free and he'll probably elect to go somewhere else. We figure it will be an area we have to fill."

Our View

Vandy is currently the most accurate kicker in NFL history, converting 87.5 percent of his field goal attempts. However, he's best known for shanks against the Patriots last season and in the Colts' playoff loss to the Steelers this year, and for ripping quarterback Peyton Manning on Canadian television. Vanderjagt's appearance on Letterman three days after his miss knocked Indy out of the playoffs wasn't exactly popular with his teammates, either. Given that Indy's offense produces an average of 50-plus PAT attempts per year, whomever takes over will fall into plenty of fantasy production. Current options include Dave Rayner, who stuck with the team as a kickoff specialist last season, and street free agent Shane Andrus, who last kicked for Murray State in 2002.

Where does he go?
