All-time team with a wrinkle, 2024 version: 1 rep from each team

Yep, this was my entire point as well.

I’m also biased because Ed Reed is my all time favorite non-Jets, non-QB player. Close to a decade after his retirement I still watch his highlights and Mike’d Ups on YouTube.

I mean cmon, the guy won essentially Dee Milliner an AFC defensive player of the month award - the only productive portion of Dee’s entire career.

Yep.  He was incredible and made any defense he was on absolutely deadly.

It’s a tough call, but I think Ed Reed + Singletary/Butkus/Seau/whoever is a slightly better duo than Ray Lewis + Brian Dawkins/whoever.

And if you really gotta have Bob Sanders on the team, @HessStation, you can of course stick him at SS since he was a 1st-team all-pro at both spots.  Reed and Sanders in the same secondary?  F**k yeah.

v4.0 (changes in blue) below.

Notes:

* I wanted to get Sanders in my lineup @HessStation.

* Noll replaces Shula at HC, Marino replaces Peyton at QB, Derrick Brooks replaces Sapp as the Bucs rep, Cortez Kennedy slides into the DT slot left by Sapp's departure.

* I'm sure there's a way I can upgrade the DT slot while getting an alternative Seahawk in there - maybe Largent?  Stay tuned for v5.0, lol.

Honestly I was thinking about this….and for real if I was trying to build the greatest team ever I think I would take Dawkins at FS and Lott at SS. I know Lott won’t make it for this exercise bc of Rice but just saying. The amount of fear with Dawkins and Lott at safety is too good to pass…although i genuinely agree Reed is the greatest FS all time.

Put Jerome Brown at DT, slide Reggie White from the Eagles to the Packers, and you need a seahawk and a RT. Put Shell at RT and you need a replacement at C. Put Jeff Saturday at C and you can slide Kam Chancellor in at SS

Proud Of You Yes GIF

You're very good at this, sir!

I did have Kam Chancellor on one of my earlier iterations, I just wasn't super thrilled with it.  Even though Safety isn't a premium position I still want a super elite duo there.  To me, Bob Sanders >>> Kam Chancellor even though his career was way too short.

The best Safety duo would be Reed/Polamalu but its proven difficult to get them both on the team without weakening the rest of the defense a bit too much (I.E. ending up with a Cortez Kennedy type on it).

Honestly, that's why I went Earl Thomas at FS and had Ray Lewis as the Ravens rep and Marvin Harrison for the Colts. If you want Polamalu, swap him for Sanders, shift the Colts rep to WR (Harrison in for Fitz) and take Bruce Arians as your HC. That gives you a "Steelers-->Colts--->Cardinals--->Steelers" circle of replacements

This is hard.  I don't love that I don't have the guys I think were the best at their position or the best who played for their team in some cases.  I would never go Lynch in front of Lott or Larry Fitzgerald over Rice but having to cover every team is tough.  A lot of sacrifices but overall a team that could win a lot of games.
