LOS ANGELES - Agent Scott Boras refused to accept that his client, Mets left-hander Oliver Perez, is "erratic."

After winning his first two decisions, Perez has lost his last three, and his ERA is just south of 5.00.

It really doesn't matter, because by the time Perez hits the free-agent market this winter, he'll do so with a Boras booklet that will make Sandy Koufax pale by comparison.

"I wouldn't discuss that," Boras said of the status of negotiations for a contract extension.

Perez beat the Mets in arbitration during spring training after the sides were unable to reach agreement on a multiyear deal.

Boras said he doesn't have "an adversarial relationship" with the Mets and that the arbitration process will have no impact on this winter.

Speculation has the starting parameters at five years and $60 million, but whatever it turns out to be, Boras said it is not weighing on Perez.

"The only thing weighing on his mind is being consistent."

Boras said. Which, of course, is the opposite of erratic.

Perez has been a frequent target of boos at Shea Stadium, but Boras insisted a return to the Mets is possible.

"Oliver likes playing in New York," Boras said. "The fans have been pretty good to him."
