BS, the Big Ten woul;d not take a third tier toilet for just money,,and yo ucant arguer that until they do,,when they expanded thewy took PSU a top tier university

They took PSU because PSU has a large eastern fanbase and a massive 100k+ stadium.

Their M.O. is large, well-known research universities with a lot of alumni and/or fans. It has nothing to do with rankings. All of them are large flagship state school campuses (except NW, which is a large private school) who, in addition to alumni have a large degree of support from in-state residents. People root for Penn State because they are from PA, even though they went to other schools. People root for Michigan because they are from MI, even though they went elsewhere for school.

Northwestern... well, they just had a massive endowment that lets them play D-IA football. Oh, and they're in Chicago, a large television market.

Of the Big Ten Schools, only one (NW) makes the top-25 in selectivity in US News (when you factor in LACs, etc.). Two make the top 50 (Michigan).

-------

I actually agree that Louisville and Cincy are unlikely, but it has nothing to do with academics and everything to do with location. If the Big Ten grabs another school, Rutgers fits best with their large-flagship-state-school concept and it is in the NY Metro area, which opens that market up in ways that PSU alone don't.

After Rutgers, Syracuse is probably the best choice location-wise.
