idahojetsfan Posted November 19, 2010 Author Share Posted November 19, 2010 AFL To Expand Rosters To 24 Players 11/19/2010 5:10 PM AFL Commissioner Jerry Kurz today announced that team rosters will expand to 24 players from 23, for the 2011 season. The added roster spot will allow teams to activate 21 players each game, with three players listed as inactive. In 2010, 20 players were eligible for the active roster while three were listed as inactive. “Because of the enhanced 18-game schedule for the 2011 season, teams will be granted an additional roster spot,” Kurz said. The 24-man roster will also be exercised during postseason play. The 24th season of the AFL will kick off with in-state rivals and expansion teams, Ron Jaworski’s Philadelphia Soul at Lynn Swann’s Pittsburgh Power, on NFL Network on Friday, March 11, 2011. Singleton (6’7, 225, Memphis) joins the Sharks after spending time with the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL. Singleton, a recent graduate of the University of Memphis, finished his career leading the Tigers in all-time touchdown receptions (22). Starting 24 games from 2006 to 2009, Singleton pulled in 164 receptions for 2,365 yards. Singleton was held without a catch in only three games in his 48 appearances. Singleton was a two-time All-Conference USA honorable mention. As a prep athlete, Singleton averaged 22.3 yards a reception as a senior at Haywood High. He was a two-year starter who totaled 26 catches for 580 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2004 and helped his squad to a 9-3 record and a second-round appearance in the state playoffs. Singleton was named first-team all-region and second-team All-West Tennessee. He was also selected as an honorable mention pick on the Associated Press All-State team and selected to play in the Tennessee-Kentucky All-Star Game. The Jackson Sun selected Singleton as the Male Athlete of the Year. He was a four-sport athlete who also lettered in basketball, baseball and track. Registration for the open player tryout begins at 8:00am with the workout beginning promptly at 9:00am. Plantation Park is located at 3060 Racetrack Rd, St. Johns, FL 32259. All participants must be 18 years of age or older. To become a Jacksonville Shark, bring a completed tryout packet found here along with $80 cash, money order or credit card (checks will not be accepted). The tryouts will be a combination of drills including the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, and various position-specific drills. The coaching staff will be evaluating each potential Shark during the exercises. The open tryout is for any person that still dreams of lacing up their pads and bringing a championship to Jacksonville. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION •Participants will receive a t-shirt to wear during the tryout. •The tryout will be conducted on grass, so participants are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear. •Please bring plenty of water, as it will not be provided. •A trainer will be on hand for emergencies only – not for player taping. •There is no full-contact, thus, no need for shoulder pads or helmets. •Kickers WILL NOT be evaluated during this tryout. Duncan (6’2, 315, Pittsburgh) joins the Sharks after spending time on the practice squad with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers in 2009 and the Buffalo Bills practice squad and roster in 2009 and 2010. Duncan will be entering his rookie season in the Arena Football League. As a Pittsburgh Panther, Duncan played in all 48 consecutive games in his four active years. Named the Defensive Line MVP in 2008 by the Pitt coaching staff, Duncan recorded 55 tackles with 1.5 sacks in his 13 starts. In 2007, he started 11 of the 12 games, all at nose tackle, recording 40 tackles and two sacks. Duncan finished his career with 145 total tackles and 5.5 quarterback sacks over his 35 starts. Duncan majored in Administration of Justice. Duncan was an All-Florida Class 3A second-team selection who led Glades Central (Belle Glade, FL) to undefeated regular seasons each of his last two years. He was named to the All-Palm Beach County and All-Western Conference teams along with being selected to play in the Outback Steakhouse All-Star Game. After all, when Canadian Football League legend Doug Flutie says Matt Grothe has a pretty good chance of succeeding here people tend to sit up and take notice. The Argos announced Tuesday that they have added five players to their 2011 roster. Among them is the former University of South Florida star, who spent October on the team’s practice roster. Grothe showed enough in his month here to impress the Argos, who have already said there will be an open competition for the starting quarterback job next spring. ``What he brings to the table is that he’s very much a game-time player,” said Argo offensive co-ordinator Jaime Elizondo, who first saw Grothe’s talents when he was coaching at Syracuse University. ``When you look at his size, he’s not a big quarterback. He doesn’t jump out at you. ``But what does is that he makes plays. He makes plays with his feet, with his arm.” Sounds a bit like Flutie, who befriended Grothe after an impressive performance against Rutgers a few years ago. ``He’s a friend, a guy who I rely on for advice,” Grothe said Tuesday after a day of supply teaching in Lakeland, Fla. ``He’s told me I’ve got a good chance of playing here. ``He told me he thought I had a lot in common with him in the way I play and he said if I worked hard, I could have some success up here. ``It’s in my hands. I’m looking forward to getting out there and busting my butt.” Grothe, the Big East’s all-time leader in total offence, is coming off a frustrating15 months. He suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the third game of the 2009 season, which not only ended his year but dashed all hopes of being drafted by a National Football League team. He had unsuccessful tryouts with Tampa Bay and was a late cut of the Florida Tuskers after the United Football League team decided to go with two veteran quarterbacks. His brief time in Toronto has him hankering for more. ``I love it up there,” said the 24-year-old Florida native. ``Toronto is an awesome city. ``I like Canadian football better than the football I’ve played all my life. It gives you more options, run and pass. It’s a lot of fun. ``It’s more like the way I’ve played in high school and college.” The Argos are bringing back two other late-season import additions to the practice squad: wide receiver D.J. Boldin, younger brother of Baltimore Ravens star receiver Anquan Boldin, and offensive lineman Andre Barbour. Also added to the roster are wide receiver Steven Turner, drafted 30th overall last year before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in training camp, and offensive lineman Michael Warner, a fifth-round pick from McMaster. Kansas City receives future considerations from the Sharks. Washington (6’2, 305, Clark-Atlanta) found himself on the transaction wire as a traded player for the second time this off-season. Originally assigned to the Georgia Force Wednesday, September 29, 2010, Washington was traded from Georgia to the Command on Monday, November 15, 2010. Washington began his collegiate career at University of Delaware in 2003 where he was part of the NCAA Division I-AA (now Football Championship Sub-Division) National Championship team. Clark later transferred to Clark University where he finished his collegiate career in 2009. Washington joins LaRoche Jackson as the second Clark player added to the 2011 roster. Washington will join the Sharks for his rookie season in the Arena Football League. He does, however, have indoor experience playing for the minor-league Arkansas Diamonds of the IFL in 2010. Summers (6’1, 260, Toledo) joins the Sharks in 2011 for his rookie season as a fullback/linebacker. As a Rocket, Summer saw action in 39 games, starting 17, in his four years at Toledo. Summers played linebacker in 2006 and 2007 before becoming a defensive end in 2008 and taking over as the top nose tackle for his squad in 2009. Summers finished his collegiate career with 135 tackles (53 solo) and five total sacks. Summers, nicked named “D.J.” for Derrick Junior, followed in his older brother’s footsteps by attending the University of Toledo. Brandon Summers was a quarterback for the Rockets.
