Pennington will test arm Friday

Trainer Dave Price checks on Chad Pennington's shoulder on QB's first day of double sessions.

Declaring that "my vacation is over, and it's time to get ready for Sept. 11," Chad Pennington emerged yesterday from his first double practice of training camp and claimed his surgically repaired shoulder is ready to withstand the rigors of a full workload.

"I feel normal again," the Jets' quarterback said at Hofstra.

Pennington said his goal is participate in every practice between now and the Sept. 11 opener in Kansas City - a total of 17 sessions, starting with another double practice today. Before yesterday, he had missed 10 of 21 practices and the first preseason game, a carefully scripted plan designed to build his shoulder strength.

Although it hasn't been announced, Pennington will make his preseason debut Friday night at Giants Stadium, where the Jets will meet the Vikings. He probably will play about one quarter, his first game action since the playoff loss to the Steelers last January.

Yesterday was another important hurdle for Pennington, who was eager to see how his shoulder, six months removed from surgery, would handle two practices in one day. After a spotty performance in the morning workout, he rebounded with a strong effort, completing nine of 12 passes in full-squad drills and nine of 11 in 7-on-7.

Pennington called it "a great sign" that he appeared stronger in the second practice, also claiming he didn't experience any soreness. By the time he walked off the field at the end of a long day, he seemed more concerned about getting comfortable in Mike Heimerdinger's system than about the state of his shoulder.

"Now I can concentrate on the offense; I don't have to worry about myself anymore," he said. "It's getting kind of old, worrying about this and talking about it."

When Pennington takes the field Friday night, it will be "the first step to ending the recovery phase," as he described it. There still are questions, but he apparently passed the practice-field test. "You can see his arm getting stronger," receiver Justin McCareins said. "I'm sure some days he's more sore than others, but to me, he looks just as good as he was ... He looks more confident in his ability to throw the ball."

Pennington, ever the perfectionist, is trying to master the nuances of Heimerdinger's offense, which requires different reads than the old Paul Hackett system. He's also working on his footwork. Because the new offense employs more of a deep dimension in the passing game, Pennington is trying to do a better job of using his feet and lower body to get more mustard on the longer throws. He spent the last week studying old tapes of John Elway, who thrived in the same system late in his career. Heimerdinger is a former Broncos assistant.

"It doesn't matter if you're John Elway or whoever, if you don't have your feet under you, you can't make the long throws," said Pennington, claiming he relied too heavily on his arm over the last four seasons.

"He's really hard on himself," Herm Edwards said. "He had a lot of things on his mind and he's thinking a lot. He knows that time is running out."

LAW NOT IN ORDER: Ty Law, still not practicing, won't play Friday night, Edwards said. There's a chance that Law, working himself into shape, might not play next week against the Giants. ... Guard Brandon Moore pulled a hamstring and won't play this week.

Ahhhhhh, I knew it. It was Pennington's footwork that kept him from throwing it like Elway. <whew>!

Dammit if he wasn't right. I went out in my backyard, changed my footwork a bit, and threw a 98 MPH fastball right through my aluminum siding. Sunnuvabitch!

Dumbass... now you are going to have to replace the whole side of your trailer.
