QB - Brian Hoyer to jets ? ? ?

Brian Hoyer's time with the Houston Texans seems to be coming to an end. ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio has heard from a league source that Hoyer is expected to exit the roster "sooner than later," now that Brock Osweiler is in town. Both Florio and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport believe the New York Jets could be a possible trade partner for Hoyer, although they are also rumored to be interested in trading for Colin Kaepernick. Of course, there's still the chance that the Jets can get a new deal worked out with last season's starter, Ryan Fitzpatrick. Per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, if the Texans are successful in shipping out Hoyer for some draft picks, Tom Savage would become the No. 2 option on Houston's depth chart.

Hoyer's time in Houston was marred by injuries, inconsistency and anightmarish 30-0 playoff loss this past postseason, so the Texans' intention to move on from Hoyer this offseason did not come as a surprise. As ESPN's Tania Ganguli notes, the Texans were doing their due diligence at the combine by meeting with QB prospects before ultimately landing their starter of the future in Osweiler.

I don't want Hoyer. I'd rather see Petty get real reps. We have a win-now offense, maybe even enough talent to hide rookie mistakes.

Marshall, Decker, Forte, Powell, Khiry, Devin Smith... this offense has the potential to drop 24+ points per game even with a journeyman at QB. Just need our defense to helps us to recover from the inevitable mistakes that come with having a bad QB.

With the Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick "still far apart" in contract negotiations, Gang Green is looking elsewhere for help at quarterback.New York is among the teams sniffing around Colin Kaepernick, but if they don't land the 49erspasser, expect them to inquire about Texans signal-caller Brian Hoyer, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

Well-publicized interest in both Kaepernick and Hoyer makes sense: It puts the squeeze on Fitzpatrick's camp. Among the teams inquiring about Kaepernick -- the Browns andBroncos lead the way, per NFL Media's Michael Silver and Rapoport -- the Jets are seen as the least serious party.Still, the Jets under general manager Mike Maccagnan have operated as a no-nonsense franchise, boldly swinging a trade last offseason for wideout Brandon Marshall and adding running back Matt Forte on Wednesday.

Fitzpatrick was surprisingly productive for the Jets last season, but Maccagnan and the team don't appear willing to overpay for a career journeyman. Hoyer would come cheap after the Texans put all their chips on the table to land former Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler. The Jets also have Geno Smith on the roster, but he can't dream of matching Fitzpatrick's fit into this Chan Gailey-led attack. Hoyer -- a streaky operator -- isn't about to save the world, either. The Jetsreuniting with Fitzpatrick still makes the most sense.
