You think Ross will be there in the 2nd?

Is that a trade with the Texans for Nick Martin?  Other than that this looks like a good draft.  Ross and White may be late first rounders that may slip, but if not other good players will be there.  Jordan Legget would be a great get in the 5th.  His stock is being pushed down only because other TEs are being hyped.  Not a big fan of the free agent signings.

Bears could be loading up for run at CB Stephon Gilmore, QB Mike Glennon

March 2, 2017.

Brad Biggs Chicago Tribune

A veteran agent emerged from the NFL Players Association's annual meeting Thursday morning to begin a full day of meetings with teams interested in his pending free-agent clients.

"These teams better come loaded for bear," he said.

The point he was making is the schedule change that pushed back the scouting combine by a week — and right up against the beginning of the legal tampering period at 11 a.m. Tuesday — has parties getting down to business.

There's no longer a window of about 10 days before free agency for casual conversations to gauge interest. The legal tampering period is when agents and teams can fully negotiate contracts and do everything but put a player's signature to paper. Pencils are sharpened with numbers and ranges exchanged.

Bears general manager Ryan Pace said Wednesday the team has spent the bulk of the time since the Senior Bowl planning for what figures to be an aggressive period with many layers.

"I feel extremely prepared for this free-agency process that we're about to enter, and it gives me confidence," Pace said.

The Bears' areas of need are well-documented. Quarterback and cornerback are the first two, and there aren't many positions that couldn't use an upgrade. The team has nearly $60 million in salary-cap room.

Forecasting free agency can be as hazardous as constructing a mock draft that doesn't look like a mess before the first round is half over. But based on conversations with many sources across the league, it sounds as if the Bears are expected to make a strong bid for Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore — a replacement addition to the Pro Bowl last season after a career-high five interceptions — and Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon.

The Bills opted not to use the franchise tag on Gilmore, the 10th pick in the 2012 draft, after a failed bid to extend his contract last offseason. He's one of the more sought-after defensive free agents. A college teammate of wide receiver Alshon Jeffery at South Carolina, Gilmore could command close to $13 million per season, a tick above what Janoris Jenkins signed for with the Giants last year, when the Bears were a runner-up for his services.

The Bears were also a distant second for defensive lineman Malik Jackson in free agency last year, and perhaps those memories will make Pace and contract negotiator Joey Laine more aggressive with the checkbook this time around, given the pressure on coach John Fox to show significant improvement coming off a 3-13 season.

Indications are that Glennon will be the Bears' top target to replace Jay Cutler, potentially pairing the veteran with a draft pick. A third-round pick in 2013, Glennon started 18 games in his first two seasons with the Bucs before Jameis Winston replaced him.

One NFC South head coach praised the 6-foot-7 Glennon for a strong arm, good decisions (30 touchdowns, 15 interceptions in his career) and a quick release considering his big frame. The Jets are considered a potential suitor, and Glennon could cost $10 million to $12 million per year.

Pace and Fox both praised the Bears offensive line Wednesday, so it's interesting that multiple sources indicated they might be in play for Ravens right tackle Ricky Wagner.

On the surface, that's a little puzzling considering the Bears signed Bobby Massie in free agency a year ago. Massie struggled in the first month of the season but was much more consistent the rest of the way. He doesn't have any guaranteed money remaining in his contract. He was paid $6.6 million last season and is due $5.55 million this season with a $1 million roster bonus due March 11.

"You can see the value of building a strong offensive line and what it does for the quarterback," Pace said. "In Dallas you have a great example of that. It's still a work in progress, but I feel like we're a lot better there than it was a couple of years ago. It's a steady improvement."

Wagner, 27, was a fifth-round pick from Wisconsin in 2013 and has 47 career starts. Most consider him strictly a right tackle. It remains to be seen if the Bears plan to use more resources to upgrade the line.

As for Jeffery, the team popping up the most when it comes to the playmaking wide receiver is the 49ers. He told ESPN he is looking for the best situation to win a championship now. Whom are we kidding? The first order of business in free agency is money, and if Jeffery picked the Bears, it would be hard to acknowledge them as a contender right now.

The posturing and behind-the-scenes meetings will end soon. At this time next week, the fireworks from the first 24 hours of free agency will be going off.
