Paradis
Huge pressure on these first 2 picks (another reason why Trubisky will never happen). Of the premium top 50ish picks, here's Macc's 4 selections Leo Williams, Devon Smith, Darron Lee and Christian Hackenberg. You take Williams which was the easiest pick since IND took Andrew Luck, and what are you left with?... HUGE pressure on these next two picks. That puts the WRs, Adams and Howard toward the top of the round 1 list. It makes it hard to take a QB. With McCown, they should function there. Round 2 SHOULD be easier. Lots of good players. The Jets need, at a minimum 2 (if not 3) safeties and a CB in this draft. You can draft all the safeties and you want, but if the pass rush isn't there, it ain't going to make a difference. Top 10 picks should be at a position of HIGH VALUE...you can get Safeties, RBs and TE's on the secondary FA market for value; you cannot get edge rushers, LT's or QBs and I'll even agree CB's on the secondary market without killing your cap and overpaying. This is where Macc's talent evaluation will come into play as it were; he's likely to have the pick of top OT and QBs in this draft as well as perhaps the second best edge rusher...but his pick should be from these guys if any has a good chance of being even above average at their position. If you take a TE or S at 6 and the guys is not lights out over a more than serviceable LT for the next ten years he's not doing himself, or the NYJ, any favors. varjet
Great post but I would retitle/shorten the title: "The Jets Rebuild Hinges on Drafting Better." Not better than previous regimes, just better. Last year's draft is a troubling portent for what could happen in this draft. When the Jets drafted Darron Lee, all of the top WRs were still on the board. WR is considered a high impact position. The Jets took the ILB, who may not even be better than ILBs picked below him. The Devin Smith was almost the opposite, and picking him the year before in the second could be a contributing factor to not taking a WR last year. The Jets reached for Devin Smith because they wanted a deep threat, and they missed out on Desean Jackson in FA. But I actually think that the Jets/Woody need to give Mac/Bowles a reboot. They should tell them to build the team the right way, without Woody's meddling, and give them another year to show what they can do. In this draft, that could mean looking to draft one of the offensive skill players first-Davis, Williams, Howard. More picks are better, and EDGEs will get picked later in the first round. Komba
Rebuilds in the NFL nowadays just have to do with the QB... It's a shame but that's what it has come to with the rules being enforced on CB's. It is important that they draft well at every other spot too, but it really doesn't matter if we don't have a QB.
