Best NY Jets prop bets vs. Seahawks: Bet on Mike White’s return

Looking at the best prop bet odds for New York Jets-Seattle Seahawks, a Mike White prop is intriguing in the QB's return.

Best prop bets for New York Jets vs. Seattle Seahawks

The New York Jets‘ playoff hopes are hanging by a thread as they head to Seattle for an intriguing Week 17 matchup. Both teams have been slumping lately as New York has lost five of its last six games, including four in a row, while Seattle has also lost five of its last six games after starting the season 6-3. With both teams in desperate need of a win, this should be an exciting contest.

Let’s take a look at our best prop bets for Jets vs. Seahawks.

Mike White passing yards: Over 250.5

This Jets team just responds to Mike White. Even as a fan, it is hard not to get behind a guy like White. He was a late-round draft pick and career backup but is now finally getting a chance to start, where I think he is playing pretty well.

In White’s three starts, the Jets are averaging 302.3 passing yards per game and 420.3 total yards per game. It is a small sample size for White, but in the 12 games where he did not start, the Jets are only averaging 164.2 passing yards per game and 306.8 total yards per game.

White and the Jets offense are going up against another favorable matchup this week. The Seahawks’ defense gives up the fourth-most yards in the NFL. According to Football Outsiders, Seattle’s defense ranks 26th in overall defense DVOA. The Jets should be able to move the ball through the air and on the ground.

I am expecting Mike White to have another big game passing the ball for New York.

Michael Carter anytime touchdown (+215)

Michael Carter is having a down year compared to his rookie season. When Breece Hall went down, I thought Carter would be able to fill in adequately and handle most of the touches out of the backfield. Unfortunately, he has not been able to gain any momentum, but I think he finishes the season strong.

The Seattle Seahawks are giving up 155.5 rushing yards per game on defense which ranks 31st in the NFL. For an offense that has been struggling in the red zone in recent weeks, this could be a perfect game to use the rushing attack more in that area. This should give Carter touches in the red zone and plenty of chances to score a touchdown.

Zonovan Knight has been getting most of the touches, but Carter is primed to get a larger chunk of them by the goal line. He is not a big bruiser running back, but has shown he can get into the endzone, such as in Week 5 against Miami when he powered in for two goal-line rushing touchdowns.

I anticipate Carter to have a nice game and find the endzone in Seattle.

Jets Don't Plan to Trade Zach Wilson in 2023, Says NFL Insider

The Jets enter 2023 with more quarterback questions as Zach Wilson enters his third year in the organization.

This was never part of the plan.

Zach Wilson's second season with the Jets is coming to a close and as calendars flip from 2022 to 2023, New York is bracing for another offseason full of questions about their quarterback situation.

The No. 2 overall selection has struggled mightily for New York, benched twice during his sophomore season. If he developed like some of the other quarterbacks in his draft class, the Jets would probably have a spot in the playoff picture right now, not fighting to keep their season alive and salvage an elite performance from their defense with two games to go.

Jets players and coaches have demonstrated patience and loyalty with their franchise quarterback this season, but the possibility that Wilson has thrown his final pass in green and white remains.

Mike White will start in Seattle on Sunday, the penultimate game of this season. Joe Flacco will serve as New York's backup. Wilson will be inactive. That arrangement won't change in Week 18, barring an injury.

So, what is next for Wilson?

Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur was asked that very question earlier this week.

“Keep working,’’ LaFleur told reporters. “He’s a New York Jet and that’s not changing, that’s the way my mindset is, [quarterbacks coach] Rob Calabrese, anyone else associated with it. He comes to work, and he’s got to be prepared to not just get better, but prepared to play. ... Nothing changes with Zach in terms of the preparation that we’re going to put in for him, and the work that we are going to put in for him."

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported early on Sunday morning that New York is expected to keep Wilson in their plans in 2023.

One source told Rapoport that the Jets believe Wilson is "going to get better."

"Jets general manager Joe Douglas does not plan to shop Wilson this offseason, sources say," Rapoport wrote. "The team views Wilson as an incredibly hard worker, a good teammate and very smart. He has handled his demotions well and kept working."

The Jets have the right to maintain confidence in Wilson. As LaFleur went on to say this week, Wilson is absolutely a "talented thrower," a quarterback with gifts that you can't teach. The flashes have been there. After all, New York made this bed by picking Wilson two years ago, restarting the QB clock after moving on from Sam Darnold.

Nonetheless, plans change and the Jets need to seriously consider the possibility that Wilson isn't the answer. Even if the Jets hold on to Wilson, that doesn't mean the BYU product will start going forward.

There are financial implications attached to this ordeal as well. As Rapoport writes, Wilson is due $9.31 million over the next two years, fully guaranteed. He's already received a $22.9 million signing bonus after signing a four-year deal when he was drafted. If a team were to trade for Wilson, they would have to take that on.

Perhaps Wilson can figure it out this spring. Maybe he's a late bloomer like New York's opponent on Sunday, Geno Smith. Some quarterbacks need time to find it. Wilson could take a huge leap forward in Year 3.

That said, New York isn't a team that's in a rebuild anymore. The stakes will be much higher for this franchise in 2023. Another step forward from this defense and New York's young playmakers and this club has the ammunition for a deep postseason run.

Is Wilson the quarterback to take them there?

Joe Douglas, Robert Saleh and the powers that be in Florham Park have a big decision to make this year.

The New York Jets are on the road in Seattle, Washington to take on the Seattle Seahawks today. The game starts at 4:05 pm EDT.

The weather in Seattle will be fairly mild for this time of year. Skies will be cloudy throughout the game. Winds will be negligeable at 0 - 5 mph out of the south to start the game, shifting to the southeast, then to the east as the game progresses. Temperatures will be warm for this time of year, in the mid 40s throughout the game. Relative humidity will be high, in the low to mid 80s throughout the game. There will be a small chance of showers, around 5 -10%, throughout the game.

All in all, this will be a fairly mild afternoon for fans and players alike on the first day of January, 2023. Fans will need to bundle up a bit, but temperatures will not be harsh. For the players, neither the temperatures nor the winds nor the slight risk of showers should have much of an effect on the game.

Enjoy the game everybody.

Derek Carr and the 3 most realistic QB options for the NY Jets in 2023

uncropped-1655011747472-IMG-6368-96ed9c7

7:00 AM EST

The NY Jets' quarterback room could look vastly different in a few months from now. The franchise will once again be in search of a solution at the quarterback position after what can only be described as a failure of a 2022 season for that specific position.

The Jets entered the year with high hopes for second-year QB Zach Wilson who was looking to rebound from a lackluster rookie season. Unfortunately, the exact opposite happened.

Wilson self-destructed and firmly established himself as one of the biggest busts in recent NFL history. While the Jets insist they aren't done with Wilson, it's all just coach speak. It's highly likely we never see Wilson take the field for the Jets again.

That means the team will have to enact a new plan for the 2023 season. Perhaps that plan involves a player currently on the roster. Perhaps it involves an external addition. Either way, Wilson is out of the equation.

While many would love to see the Jets go out and trade for someone like Lamar Jackson, such a scenario remains highly unlikely for a number of reasons.

The same could be said for Aaron Rodgers or even Tom Brady. Rodgers' contract makes any potential trade unlikely while Brady choosing to sign with the Jets seems a bit farfetched. They're all possible, sure, but none are exactly likely.

We're here to talk about the likely outcomes. The three most feasible and realistic plans the Jets could formulate for the quarterback position.

These options may not be the preferred scenarios to some, but they are seemingly the most likely as of the time of writing. Let's take a look at what we came up with.

3. The NY Jets re-sign Mike White and sign a competent backup

The Mike White scenario largely depends on how he plays over the final two games of the season (and perhaps the postseason). White has earned the right to play himself into 2023 consideration, but there are still various variables at play.

For instance, if White helps the Jets win their final two games and leads them to the playoffs, his case for 2023 becomes stronger. It becomes even stronger if he manages to win a playoff game or two.

White has already made an outstanding impression in his starts this season, but there's a lot at stake — both for the player and the team. The Jets are looking to make one final playoff push while White is looking to stake his claim as the guy the Jets should build around.

That said, it's hard to imagine White is able to do enough to be considered the undisputed guy moving forward. At best, the Jets would likely sign a high-level backup to provide insurance behind White in 2023.

Think of someone like Jacoby Brissett or even Gardner Minshew. A player who can serve as a fringe starter in case White falters or even extra insurance in the scenario that White misses time.

Having a capable backup would be extremely important if the Jets ultimately did decide to re-sign White and make him the starter. Right now, White isn't at that level yet. He hasn't done enough to prove to the Jets that he deserves to start next season, but there's still time.

The next two weeks are an audition for Mike White. The Jets will determine whether or not he gets the gig.

2. The NY Jets sign/trade for Derek Carr

This scenario just became a lot more feasible following the Las Vegas Raiders' decision to bench Derek Carr this past week. The move effectively ended Carr's time with the Raiders and ensured that the two sides would be parting ways this offseason.

It's a move that's been a long time coming, but it wasn't confirmed until this past week. Now, Carr will almost definitely be looking for a new home in 2023, and the Jets figure to be near the top of his list of potential suitors.

The Raiders now have two options; they can either outright release Carr or attempt to trade him. The former is the easiest and safest option while the latter requires a workaround and a bit of trust.

The Raiders would be on the hook for $40.4 million if Carr was on their roster past the third day of the 2023 waiver period. Any "trades" agreed to don't become official until the start of the new league year in March.

That means the Raiders can agree to trade Carr to a new team and avoid his guaranteed money kicking in, but if the deal were to fall through prior to the start of the new league year, they'd, for lack of a better phrase, be screwed. They'd be on the hook for Carr's $40.4 million in guarantees.

That's why it seems increasingly likely that the Raiders just outright release Carr, which makes him an even more appealing option for the Jets.

They wouldn't have to surrender assets in a trade nor would they have to take on Carr's remaining salary. That makes him a much more feasible target.

Expect the Jets to be heavily involved in Carr's market this offseason and maybe, just maybe, he ends up as the team's starting quarterback in 2023.

1. The NY Jets sign Jimmy Garoppolo

The Jets/Jimmy Garoppolo connection has made sense for quite some time now. Garoppolo has ample experience with the Jets' coaching staff having previously spent time with the likes of Robert Saleh and Mike LaFleur in San Francisco.

He's an experienced veteran quarterback who could provide stability to a position that has been anything but stable for the Jets over the last decade. It's easy to see why the Jets would be interested.

Garoppolo is set to be a free agent this offseason and it's hard to imagine the 49ers will look to bring him back with Trey Lance and now Brock Purdy in the picture. He will be playing for a new team in 2023.

The Jets are the most obvious fit for the above reasons, and much like Carr, he won't require any trade assets to acquire. It's as simple as agreeing to a deal in free agency.

There are some red flags with Garoppolo. His injury history is a concern and he has thrived under ideal circumstances in the most QB-friendly system in the NFL.

Garoppolo is a good quarterback who can give you league-average QB play — which is honestly all the Jets have been looking for. However, he is a clear step down from Carr and a few other options that might be available (Jackson, Rodgers, Brady).

That said, the coaching staff/scheme fit is as obvious as it gets. No team makes more sense for Garoppolo than the Jets and it still seems likely that they express serious interest in signing him this offseason

Would Jimmy Garoppolo be the flashiest addition? Not at all. But he is a capable quarterback who fits the bill of exactly what the Jets are looking for. He remains atop the list of realistic Jets 2023 quarterback candidates.

Huge opportunity ahead for Jets' Mike White: Playoffs and payday

SEATTLE -- A look at what's happening around the New York Jets:

1. Chance of a lifetime: Mike White gets first dibs on the 2023 quarterback job, which appears open in the wake of Zach Wilson's second benching. Not only will he face playoff-like intensity Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks (4:05 p.m. ET, Fox), but White has the added pressure of playing for his future. He will be an unrestricted free agent, which means a potentially nice payday.

If White plays well, wins the last two games and leads the Jets to the playoffs, he could command a contract in the neighborhood of two years, $30 million, including $20 million guaranteed, according to an agent who represents prominent quarterbacks. The agent, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, projected a floor of $10 million to $12 million per year.

White has "enough good games on tape" to attract teams looking for a "bridge" quarterback, the agent said, also mentioning White's age (27) and familiarity with the popular West Coast/Shanahan offense as selling points.

Will the Jets try to re-sign him as their starter?

Even if White ends with a flurry, it doesn't guarantee the QB1 job. The organization would evaluate all options, weighing White versus other available quarterbacks. That list could include the Las Vegas Raiders' Derek Carr, who probably will be cut or traded within three days of the Super Bowl. The San Francisco 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo, due to become a free agent, would be a consideration because of his background with members of the Jets' staff.

i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2022%2F1204%2Fr1102144_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg&w=320&h=180&scale=crop&location=origin
White is a fan and locker room favorite, but he has only six career starts (2-4). The Jets' regime -- facing a possible make-or-break year in 2023 -- might prefer a more proven player with so much at stake. White has two games (or more) to state his case, although he insisted he won't fall into the trap of thinking ahead. He learned that lesson last year. He's trying to focus on Seattle.

"It's not so much the longevity of it, it's just the opportunity itself," he said of the starting job. "Any time you're named the starter, you wear that badge with honor."

2. Restless in Seattle? If the Jets end the season on a six-game losing streak -- rare, even for them -- the spotlight will shift to owner Woody Johnson, whose patience could be tested. He hasn’t made any major moves since 2015, when he hired Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan as the coach and general manager, respectively. He was out of the football loop from 2017 to 2021, serving as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, so there’s some curiosity around the organization as to how he will react if the season ends with a thud.

"Woody, he’s been good. He wants to win like all of us do," Saleh said. "We’re all trying to search for answers."

When Johnson takes a step back, he presumably will recognize the organization is in a better place than last year, quarterback situation notwithstanding. Saleh described the current slide as a teaching tool, saying players and coaches are learning about "playoff-atmosphere football." He admitted this is a "silver lining" viewpoint, adding, "Not all of it has been good. It’s always tough, but through adversity is where you find out the most about yourself and where you have the most growth. So that’s the way we’re kind of attacking it."

The Jets, losers of four in a row, haven't dropped five straight after the 10th game since 1996 -- their infamous 1-15 season. The only two other times it happened was in 1986 and 1994.

3. Did you know? Rookie Breece Hall, who hasn't played in two months because of a major knee injury, remains the team's leading rusher with 463 yards.

4. Revenge game: Cornerback D.J. Reed has no shortage of motivation for this game. When he signed in March, leaving the Seahawks in free agency, he said Seattle's offer was "insulting." He toned it down this week, saying he harbors no ill will toward his former team. He did allow that he's "really looking forward" to facing them.

Reed also was stung by not being selected to the Pro Bowl, but that's "more motivation for me. Next year, I'll make it obvious."

5. Laurels and Hardee: Special-teamer Justin Hardee was overcome with emotion upon learning he had been selected to his first Pro Bowl. He supplanted the great Matthew Slater, a 10-time Pro Bowler with the New England Patriots. Hardee said Slater reached out to congratulate him, a classy gesture.

"He told me I had his vote," Hardee said.

6. Young critical of Wilson: It was surprising to hear Steve Young deliver such a blunt assessment of Wilson this week on ESPN New York radio ("The Michael Kay Show"). Young, who knows Wilson through their BYU connection and has provided counsel on occasion, wasn't a fan of the decision to bench Wilson in November. Now, after witnessing last week's poor performance, Young has changed his opinion on what's best for Wilson, who was benched for a second time.

"I was wrong. He can't play right now," said the Pro Football Hall of Famer, an ESPN analyst. "He's not learning, not getting better, so he has to leave the field."

Young said Wilson must learn to master "commodity work," meaning basic quarterback throws -- and he doesn't believe that can happen in games. He also said, "The team recognizes the talent, but also recognizes something is not right."

Deciding Wilson's future will be the No. 1 personnel decision in the offseason.

7. Half empty? Michael Nania of the Jets X-Factor website uncovered an interesting trend about the Jets' offense: It leads the league in plays out of the empty formation, with 123 such plays, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Here's the kicker: The Jets are one of only five teams that hasn't scored a touchdown out of empty formations. The most glaring example of coming up empty out of empty was the fourth-down, goal-line play against the Minnesota Vikings (Braxton Berrios drop).

For a team that wants a strong running game and has suffered pass protection issues with relatively inexperienced quarterbacks, it seems like it might make sense to keep a running back in the backfield more often.

8. Saleh vs. mentor: Saleh considers Seahawks coach Pete Carroll one of the most influential people in his coaching career. Out of work, with a wife and infant baby, Saleh didn't know where he'd end up. He got an offer from Carroll and wound up spending three seasons (2011 to 2013) as a defensive quality-control coach for the Seahawks.

"My wife, she’s panicking because she’s wondering where our next meal is coming from because I didn’t have a contract," Saleh said. "The good Lord came off the top ropes and sent me a blessing."

9. Exes everywhere: Former Jets quarterbacks are scattered across the league as players, coaches and announcers. The Jets seem to cross paths with one every week. On Sunday, they face Geno Smith, who has blossomed into a legitimate starter six years after leaving the Jets as a free agent. In previous weeks, they encountered Ryan Fitzpatrick (Prime Video analyst for Jets-Jacksonville Jaguars); Mark Brunell (Detroit Lions assistant); Kevin O'Connell (Minnesota Vikings coach); and Trevor Siemian (Chicago Bears backup, who started).

Where have you gone, Bryce Petty?

10. The last word: "We have to maximize each day -- keep grinding -- and Sunday, that's when we have fun. That's when we go out there and dominate. That's what we plan to do." -- Reed on the team's mindset ahead of playing Seattle

Jets OC Mike LaFleur discusses the team's offense and the struggles of the run game

The Jets’ offense spent too much time going backward against the Jaguars last week, something that has been a problem for the unit all season.

They have been awful on first downs this year, and that has led to long distances to go on third down which have stalled the offense. Against the Jaguars, the Jets had penalties, sacks and runs for a loss on first down. Sure, Zach Wilson was not good, but it is also hard to operate when constantly facing third-and-long.

The Jets average 7.7 yards to go on third down this season, tied for worst in the NFL with the Patriots and Broncos. Those are two offenses you don’t want to be in the same sentence as.

“Negative plays on first down, they’re backbreaking,” head coach Robert Saleh said. “It’s not impossible to get out of, but if you make a living out of that, which has been a common theme for us offensively, whether it be penalties, [tackles for loss], sacks on first down, TFLs in the run game. You’re putting yourself at such a disadvantage. It’s already hard enough to get 10 yards in three downs, let alone 12 or 13 in two downs.

“So, yeah, being more successful on first down, trying to get to third-and-manageable, we’re living in third-and-longs. All of it is all-encompassing, and just to be able to stay on schedule, run the ball, get positive yards — whether it’s 1, 2 or 3 — pass the ball, and make sure that the worst thing that happens is incomplete. Efficiency on first down has got to get a lot better.”

Against the Jaguars, the Jets had six penalties, a sack on first down and a run that resulted in a loss that put the Jets “behind the sticks” in second- and third-and-long.

A look at the AFC wild-card picture ahead of the Jets' game against the Seahawks. A look at the AFC wild-card picture ahead of the Jets’ game against the Seahawks.  NY Post illustration

“We’ve got to be more efficient on first down. That’s pretty simple, right?” offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said. “The more third-and-manageable’s you can be in, the better it’s going to be, the better you can sustain drives. Not just the Jacksonville game, but it’s felt like that for a few weeks now. We got to be better. I got to call better plays. I got to coach better. We got to coach better, then we got to execute better to put our whole team in situations where we can get in those third-and-manageable’s and continue to move the ball.”

The Jets elevated QB Chris Streveler from the practice squad for the second straight week. Streveler replaced Zach Wilson in the second half of last week’s loss to the Jaguars. … OT Cedric Ogbuehi was activated off injured reserve and placed WR Jeff Smith on IR.

JETS’ FIRST STEP AFTER GETTING HELP: BEAT THE SEAHAWKS

SEATTLE — The Jets were down for the count after losing to the Jaguars three days before Christmas in a nationally televised game.

Then, a funny thing happened: Everything went the Jets’ way over the holiday weekend. The Patriots lost to the Bengals on Christmas Eve. The Dolphins lost to the Packers on Christmas Day. On Monday, the Jets got their best present when quarterback Mike White was cleared by the doctors to start the game Sunday against the Seahawks.

“Everything that happened that needed to happen for us, it almost felt kind of like a sign, like a second chance almost, and maybe a little extra life was breathed into the locker room,” White said.

The Jets (7-8) venture to Seattle to face the Seahawks (7-8) with everything to play for. Their playoff scenario is simple: If they win the last two games and the Patriots lose one of their final two, the Jets will be in the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Mike White, who is returning from a rib injury, is looking to lead the Jets past the Seahawks. Mike White, who is returning from a rib injury, is looking to lead the Jets past the Seahawks.

N.Y. Post: Charles Wenzelberg

“You can’t ask for anything more than this,” rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson said. “Given how we’ve played down the stretch and to still have a chance, we’ve been kind of lucky to get this opportunity. We haven’t won a game in December and we’ve got this opportunity. Now it’s time to take advantage.”

That is the question: Can the Jets take advantage of this opportunity?

They have lost four straight games and their playoff hopes have descended from looking really good to needing plenty of help to now needing a little help. The offense has been struggling, failing to score 20 points in each of the past three games. The defense has given up some key plays in critical moments. All of that has the Jets fighting to stay alive.

White’s return certainly will help. Zach Wilson was terrible in his two starts while White was out dealing with broken ribs. White can’t be a one-man savior, but he should give the Jets confidence that beating the Seahawks, who have lost three straight games themselves, is possible.

“Obviously, the guys trust him,” linebacker C.J. Mosley said. “There’s a spark when he’s on the field.”

It has been just 10 days since the debacle against the Jaguars, but the Jets feel like they have new life after things broke their way last weekend. Now, they have to finish the job.

Why Nick doesn't want a 'performance for the ages' from Mahomes | What's Wright?

Patrick Mahomes is in position to secure his MVP award in these next two weeks, but Nick Wright tells Damonza why he's not looking for a knock down, drag out, performance of the ages from the Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback right now. What he wants is for the Chiefs to stay healthy, especially with the Las Vegas Raiders pretty much securing their season is over by benching Derek Carr, and with the Buffalo Bills still in reach of the one seed. Is Patrick Mahomes the best QB in the AFC over Allen, Burrow & Herbert?

The annual Serby Says NFL Awards rail against the continued bias toward quarterbacks in the voting for Most Valuable Player.

Wide receivers and running backs are people, too.

MVP

Justin Jefferson, Vikings

No receiver has ever won this honor, because a quarterback has won it 45 times since the AP began handing it out in 1957, and we all get why.

Jerry Rice (64-1,078 with a career-best 22 touchdowns) received 30 votes in 1987 and finished six votes behind John Elway (54.6 completion percentage, 19 touchdowns, 12 interceptions). The Broncos were 10-4-1 and Super Bowl runners-up that year. The 49ers were 13-2 before losing to the Vikings in the divisional round.

Rice deserved MVP. He was second again in 1995, receiving 10 votes to Brett Favre’s 69. Favre (38 TDs, 13 INTs) led the Packers to an 11-5 season before losing in the NFC Championship game to the Cowboys. Rice caught a career-best 122 balls for 1,838 yards and 15 TDs. The 49ers (11-5) lost to Favre in the divisional round. Hard to argue with Favre.

Quarterbacks have won the award nine consecutive times and 14 of the past 15. Running back Adrian Peterson, in 2012, was the last non-quarterback to win it.

Cooper Kupp’s triple crown last season — leading the league in receptions (145), yards (1,947) and touchdowns (16) — was still not enough to dethrone Aaron Rodgers (37 TDs, four INTs), whose Packers (13-3) lost in the divisional round to the 49ers. The champion Rams were 12-5 before Kupp went on to become Super Bowl MVP. Kupp received one vote and finished third. Rodgers received 39. Tom Brady received 10.

Patrick Mahomes is the favorite this time, followed by surging Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen … followed by Jefferson. The Chiefs wouldn’t be the Chiefs without Mahomes (37 TDs, 11 INTs), and the Eagles wouldn’t be 13-2 without Hurts, etc., etc. So obviously they are invaluable — the quarterback in a quarterback-driven league always is.

But where would the Vikings (12-3) be without Jefferson (123-1,756, eight TDs), who is on the brink of an historic first 2,000-yard season for a receiver? How do you quantify “valuable”? Jefferson won’t come close in the MVP voting. He’ll have to settle for the slightly less prestigious Serby Says MVP.

“If he breaks Calvin Johnson’s record (1,963 yards in 16-game season), I think there’s gonna be a lot more notoriety to it,” ESPN analyst Damien Woody told Serby Says. “If I had a vote, I’m voting for Patrick Mahomes, simply because when I look at the numbers he’s been putting up without Tyreek Hill, and be able to have the Chiefs based in the same position that they’ve been year in, year out with Tyreek Hill. It’s hard to overlook that.”

Justin Jefferson Justin Jefferson USA TODAY Sports

I understand that. But I tell Woody that I am sick and tired of quarterbacks winning it every year. He laughed and said: “I don’t blame you. I don’t blame you at all.”

I tell Woody I think he’s the best player in the league myself.

“You will be hard-pressed for me to argue against that,” he said. “I think that every time that Kirk needs a throw, the whole league knows that Kirk Cousins is throwing the ball to him and they still can’t stop it. … [Jefferson’s] route-running is ridiculous. He’s a very smooth athlete, gets in and out of his breaks really fast, he’s very competitive when the ball is in the air. He’s just money. He’s a money guy.”

Offensive Player of the Year

Patrick Mahomes (QB, Chiefs)

See Woody’s argument. Can’t ignore the guy, right? If the oddsmakers are right, this will be Mahomes’ second MVP award after he beat out Drew Brees in 2018.

Defensive Player of the Year

Nick Bosa (DE, 49ers)

He has 17.5 sacks — six in the fourth quarter — and two forced fumbles. Micah Parsons (13) has one sack in his past four games. Brock Purdy doesn’t have to do this alone.

“[Bosa] can do it all — he plays run well, and he might be the most technically-sound pass rusher that we have in our league,” Woody said. “The way he’s able to use his hands, he can beat you any way you want. He can beat you with speed, he can beat you with power, he can beat you with finesse.”

Offensive Rookie of the Year

Garrett Wilson (WR, Jets)

He has lived up to best-receiver-in-the-draft hype (71-996, four TDs), and he has done it with Zach Wilson as his quarterback more than anyone else.

“I think he’s gonna be like a Justin Jefferson,” Woody said. “I think he’s a better athlete than Justin Jefferson.”

Defensive Rookie of the Year

Sauce Gardner (CB, Jets)

Quarterbacks throw in his direction at their own peril. Receivers talk smack at him at their own peril. He’s long, and he’s long on the requisite athletic arrogance for stardom.

“He’s played so well that teams don’t really challenge him,” Woody said. “He’s the real deal.”

Here’s how real: “I think he’s better than the rookie [Darrelle] Revis,” Woody said. “I think he’s more advanced than Revis at this stage of the game.”

Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner celebrates after making an interception earlier in the season. Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner celebrates after making an interception earlier in the season. Robert Sabo

Comeback Player of the Year

Saquon Barkley (RB, Giants)

“I just want to show the Giants that the guy they drafted is still here,” Barkley said at the beginning of training camp. And then: “Now, it’s a kill mindset. Now it’s like, you know what? [Expletive] everybody. I’m ready to go crazy,” he said on the Second Wind podcast. He has gone 283-1,254-10-TDs crazy, with 55 receptions for 343 yards.

“He looks like the Saquon that first came into the league,” Woody said.

Coach of the Year

Nick Sirianni (Eagles)

“Look at how good Jalen Hurts has gotten,” Woody said. “The way that he built a system around the quarterback, that’s what smart coaches do.”

Executive of the Year

Howie Roseman (Eagles)

The draft-day trade for A.J. Brown for the 18th and 101st picks changed everything for Hurts and the Eagles, and led to the firing of Titans general manager Jon Robinson.

“They’ve made so many moves that are just paying off big dividends. … I don’t know an executive that can touch him this year,” Woody said.

Interim Head Coach of the Year

Steve Wilks (Panthers)

Takes over a 1-4 team from Matt Rhule. Christian McCaffrey is traded. Sam Darnold takes over at QB for Baker Mayfield, with some PJ Walker in between.

“If he beats Tampa [Bay] and they win the NFC South, there is no question in my mind that he should be hired as a full-time head coach for the Carolina Panthers,” Woody said. And even if he doesn’t.

The Wrong-way Marshall

Jakobi Meyers (WR, Patriots)

His wrong-way pass for Mac Jones that became a Chandler Jones pick-six has never been in Bill Belichick’s playbook. Or anyone else’s.

“That was the stupidest play I’ve ever seen. Ever,” Woody said.

The Bomb Cyclone

Zach Wilson (QB, Jets)

Christian Hackenberg could have performed better on “Thursday Night Football” on Dec. 22. Ask waterlogged Jets fans.

The Zappe

Brock Purdy (QB, 49ers)

Mr. Irrelevant has stepped in seamlessly for Jimmy Garoppolo.

The Dennis Green

Joe Burrow (QB, Bengals)

“I am who I thought I was.” He was who the Bengals thought he was even with Ja’Marr Chase sidelined.

Joe Burrow Joe Burrow USA TODAY Sports

The I am not who they thought I was

Russell Wilson (QB, Broncos)

Woody: “His game needs to adjust. He’s been on the decline the past couple of years in Seattle. I think he needs a really good coach to come in there and really build his confidence and build a system to maximize most of what he’s got left.”

Is he fixable? “It’s hard to say after this year, man, ’cause I’ve never seen a quarterback fall off a cliff like Russell Wilson did this year,” Woody said.

The OBJ

Justin Jefferson (WR, Vikings)

That fourth-and-18, one-handed, falling-backward, 32-yard catch against the Bills … Google it.

The Yogi

Vikings’ rally

Kirk Cousins and the Vikings stormed back from 33-0 against the Colts for a 39-36 win. A reminder, it ain’t over till it’s over.

Best Postgame Quote

The Hooray for Hollywood

Baker Mayfield (QB, Rams)

That game-winning, 98-yard TD drive against the Raiders 48 hours after being waived by the Panthers was the stuff of movie magic.

“I think Baker Mayfield is jumping back on people’s radars again,” Woody said.

Worst Head-coaching Decision

Nathaniel Hackett (Broncos)

He began sealing his own fate when he thought letting Brandon McManus attempt an ill-fated, last-minute 64-yard field goal trailing 17-15 at Seattle was preferable to letting Wilson, his $242,588,236 million man, try to convert fourth-and-5. Wide left. Which could sum up the costly Hackett-Wilson Era.

Dan Snyder (Commanders)

New York Jets: Final Injury Report for Week 17

denzel mims, new york jets

Wide receiver Denzel Mims during the opening day of the 2022 New York Jets Training Camp in Florham Park, NJ on July 27, 2022. Opening Of The 2022 New York Jets Training Camp In Florham Park Nj On July 27 2022

The New York Jets have a huge game tomorrow afternoon in Seattle against a Seahawks team with everything to play for as well.

To this point, on the injury front, only two Jets have been ruled out for tomorrow’s game. Those two players being wide receiver Jeff Smith, and cornerback, Brandin Echols. The two also happen to be the top special teams punt coverage gunners opposite Justin Hardee, leading to some concerns and an opportunity for someone to fill in and contribute tomorrow.

Obviously, the headlining news all week when it comes to injuries for the Jets is the return of quarterback, Mike White. He was cleared very early on in the week, Monday, and undeniably gives the Jets the best chance to win out and make the playoffs.

Aside from White, let’s take a look at a few other key Jets returning tomorrow.

New York Jets getting multiple players back for pivotal matchup:

The Jets will be getting some wide receiver depth going into tomorrow. Denzel Mims, after leaving early in Week 15 with a concussion, was a full participant in practice on both Thursday and Friday and will be good to go for tomorrow.

One defensive starter making a return after a two-game absence is free safety, Lamarcus Joyner. He has played 100% of the defensive snaps over the Jets’ first 13 games of the year. After being limited with a hip injury in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, which is why he is listed as questionable, Joyner was a full participant Friday, and head coach Robert Saleh stated to the media yesterday that Joyner will be good for Sunday.

The final two players listed on the report yesterday to make note of are right guard Nate Herbig and defensive end Vinny Curry. Neither player was on the report as of Thursday, and both popped up yesterday as questionable. Not much was reported on or shared by Saleh yesterday. In the end, it seems likely that both players will suit up for the Jets tomorrow.
