Free agent Law passes physical, meets with Titans

Tennessee is among several teams top cornerback to visit

The Titans entertained cornerback Ty Law on a free-agency visit as expected, but signing him to a contract is another matter.

Law, a five-time Pro Bowler, passed the physical given by the team and met with coaches and other team officials at Baptist Sports Park.

"We wanted to meet and greet, get to know him on that basis,'' Reese said. "Once he finishes all his trips, if he wants to sit down, then I think we could get a feel for where we are. We'll just have to see.

"He seems like a nice-enough guy, though, a Pro Bowl-quality guy.''

Law is considered the best free-agent cornerback currently on the market. During his 11-year career, he's been on four Super Bowl teams and led the league in interceptions twice — including last season, when he had 10 in his first year with the Jets. His first 10 seasons were with the Patriots.

Law has already visited the Seahawks. The Patriots, Chiefs and Browns are also interested in him.

Law's agent, Carl Poston, could not be reached for comment on Thursday. But Poston said earlier this week he thought Law would fit in well with the Titans. Law, however, is believed to be looking for a signing bonus of at least $10 million, and right now the Titans have roughly $100,000 in salary-cap room.

The team could free up at least $9 million by releasing or trading quarterback Steve McNair.

Last week, the Titans also entertained former 49ers cornerback Ahmed Plummer on a free-agency visit, but indications are the team isn't currently interested in signing him.

The Titans are thin at cornerback. Last year's starters — Pacman Jones and Reynaldo Hill — are both headed into their second NFL seasons. Andre Woolfolk and Rich Gardner are in the mix, but Michael Waddell is out until at least October after rupturing his right patella tendon during a recent accident at home. The Titans picked Cortland Finnegan in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.

"I think a guy like Ty could have a good influence on that team, especially on a guy like Pacman Jones,'' Poston said. "He's a player a lot of those young guys could look to.''

Also, linebacker Cody Spencer has signed his one-year contract with the Titans.
