Red Sox skipper Francona gets extension

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Terry Francona has agreed to a contract extension through 2011 after leading the Boston Red Sox to two World Series championships in his four seasons as manager.

The deal announced Sunday includes club options for 2012 and 2013.

Francona guided Boston to World Series sweeps of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004 and the Colorado Rockies last year. He succeeded the fired Grady Little when he signed a three-year contract on Dec. 4, 2003. He later received a two-year extension through the 2008 season.

Francona can handle the club house, navigate the mine field that is Red Sox Management and handle the media with extreme poise. Not an easy feat in Boston. The man is doing exceptionally well and this is well deserved. However, that man is a nervous wreck! Honestly, for the sake of his life, he should hang 'em up here in Boston after 2011 and enjoy his kids.
