Raiders set to release Russell

Given how short an NFL player's athletic career usually is (depending on the position), I tend to agree with this.

"nlike those if us who have to plan for 20 to 30 years in retirement, NFL players have to plan for more than half a century. On average, an NFL player's career lasts about three years. Although most players end up with others job, they rarely match their earnings from football."

On the other side... THe average lifespan of an NFL starter is 58 years or something like that. Of course, that number is on the rise, as it was around 52 not long ago... But especially if the NFL wants to increase lifespan (which they obviously do), they have to let players get paid what they deserve on the "free maket" in the short time where they can get paid for football, and they have to be able to set up some sort of retired players support group to help ex nfl players find jobs or get money in some other venues...

You can't blame Russell where he was drafted though. However I agree something has to be done with rookie contracts, it's really crazy.

Agreed ! All that money for unproven talent. How many this year are going to fail ? 8? 10 ?

SOoooooooooo........have they cut him yet? This has to be the 8th or 9th "Raiders about to cut Russell" thread since he's been drafted.

A lot of us here could see "BUST" written all over Russell from the moment he was drafted.
