    Thu Jul 22, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

  • The Miami Herald reports with DE Phillip Merling (Achilles' tendon) out for the 2010 season, the Dolphins may turn their attention before training camp is over to Dallas Cowboys DE Marcus Spears, a starter who has fallen somewhat out of favor with the Cowboys and whom Bill Parcells drafted in the first round in 2005. Although Spears finished the season with a career-high 2.5 sacks in 2009, the Cowboys former first-round pick got a lower restricted free agent tender offer than either of his backups. Spears was available in trade just prior to the draft. The Dolphins also have DE Tony McDaniel, DE Ryan Baker, DE Ikaika-Alama Francis, DE Lionel Dotson and rookie DE Jared Odrick slated at defensive end. Former Jets/Ravens/Saints/49ers DE Marques Douglas might be a possibility based on his history with DC Mike Nolan. But Douglas is 33 years old and at 6-2 and 290 does not meet the prototype size the Dolphins like in their defensive ends.

Not necessarily. Remember, just like CBs, you can never have too many good pass rushers, be they DEs or OLBs.

With Merling and Ferguson now both gone we will really be on the hunt of DL's. I think we made a big mistake by not drafting Dan Williams. DL's are different than NT's. You collect DL's like you do DB's and weed them out every year. NT's are a special talent that you need to grab when you can. We will be weak this year at NT because of this error. The rest of the skill positions look OK, so far.
