Raiders-49ers game marred by two shootings, severe beating

August 21, 2011 | 7:50 am

San Francisco police are investigating whether team rivalry was to blame for three violent incidents at a preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders.

A man wearing a shirt denigrating the 49ers was critically wounded in a shooting in the Candlestick Park parking lot after the game.

The victim, in his 20s, was shot four times in the stomach and stumbled out of his truck. Police detained a suspect late Saturday.

A second shooting was reported in a different section of the parking lot.

That victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. Detectives were looking for a connection between the two shootings.

"We are treating it as separate shootings, but we believe they are related," San Francisco police Lt. Frank Harrell told KTVU-TV.

Inside the stadium, a man was severely beaten in a restroom during the fourth quarter of the game. He was hospitalized in critical condition, the Oakland Tribune reported.

The 49ers released a statement saying: "The San Francisco Police Department is investigating a shooting incident following Saturday's NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders outside Candlestick Park. No other information regarding the incident is available from the 49ers at this time."

That's just epic bulls**t. People being beaten and shot at a sporting event? Ridiculous.

I've mentioned it numerous times, Oakland and possibly Diego, are the only two places that I've been to a football game where I was actually worried about the safety of myself or friends. It's not like the trash-talking you'd get at Fenway wearing a yankees cap or jersey, but people legitimately threatening you when you walk by. I know for a fact I'd never go to Oakland with an opposing teams jersey on again.

Looks like it was gang violence that was at least partially responsible:

Gang rivalry blamed for some of violence at 49ers/Raiders game

By Tracey Kaplan and Sean Maher

Updated: 08/21/2011 02:39:35 PM PDT

Gang rivalry, not feuding fans, touched off at least some of the violence at the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders exhibition game, a source said Sunday.

The explanation is the first to surface since several melees Saturday night left two men struggling for their lives -- one from being shot in the stomach in the parking lot and the other from a savage beating in a men's bathroom. A suspect wearing an Oakland Raiders jersey was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of shooting another Raiders fan wearing an "(Expletive) the Niners" T-shirt. Rivalry between Norteno and Sureno gangs could account for that Raider fan-on-Raider-fan shooting.

Police refused to comment Sunday, citing the ongoing investigation.

The attacks raise new questions about stadium security that first arose about five months ago when San Francisco Giants fan Brian Stow was severely beaten by two men in Los Angeles Dodgers gear outside Dodger Stadium. Two suspects have been charged in the case.

Mayors Ed Lee of San Francisco and Jean Quan of Oakland, who had both attended the game and made a friendly food and coffee bet on the outcome, issued a joint statement Sunday condemning the brawls and shootings.

"Violence will not be tolerated in either of our stadiums," they said. "The incidents at Candlestick Park last night... are completely unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Fans come to our stadiums to enjoy an afternoon of football,

not to be subjected to intimidation or violence. These games are family events and the types of images we witnessed last night have no place in our arenas."

Raiders CEO Amy Trask urged the public to refrain from harshly judging Raiders fans.

"The overwhelming majority of Raiders fans -- just like the overwhelming majority of fans of all teams -- are terrific people and terrific fans,'' she said. "Every team - in every sport - has a handful of followers that do not behave in an acceptable manner - and to stereotype fans of any one team is unfair - and we should all know better than to do this."

At Candlestick Park on Saturday night, a 24-year-old man wearing an "(Expletive) the Niners" T-shirt was shot two to four times in the stomach before driving his truck to Gate A and stumbling to security, said San Francisco police Sgt. Frank Harrell. The man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition.

Another man in his 20s was shot near Lot V about 20 minutes earlier and had superficial face injuries, Harrell said. He was taken to the same hospital. The first shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m., about 15 minutes after the game ended.

"We are treating it as separate shootings, but we believe they are related," Harrell said.

Police pulled the man wearing the Oakland Raiders jersey off a party bus before it left the parking lot and are calling him a suspect.

A number of fights were also reported during Saturday's game but there was no indication those clashes had any connection to the attacks outside the stadium.

In the fourth quarter, around 7:15 p.m., a 26-year-old San Rafael man was assaulted and knocked unconscious in an upper level men's restroom, said Sgt. Michael Andraychak. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, he said.

The suspect in the beating is a male Samoan/Pacific Islander, 25 to 30 years old, 6-feet-3 to 6-feet-5, and 225 to 260 pounds. He had a goatee and long curly

hair tied in a pony tail and was last seen wearing a T-shirt and bluejeans, Andraychak said.

Bob Easton, a lifelong Raiders fan organizer of the tailgating fan group the Grill Iron Gang, said the word among his members is that the worst of Saturday's violence was tied to gang fights. Easton wasn't at the game.

"The same thing happened at a game in Oakland four or five years ago," Easton said.

He and his fellow tailgaters had set up their barbecue, he said, "and I was divvying up the food when gunshots broke out in the parking lot. A guy got hit in the leg. And we all found out later it was over Nortenos and Surenos, not actual football fans out of control."

That said, Easton added, Raiders fans do often struggle with a reputation for violence he said goes back to the days when the team was in Los Angeles. "There were a bunch of fights then," he said, but he feels that media hype about Raiders fans has now made it hard to wear silver and black without attracting trouble.

"Because of the Raiders' reputation over the years, it seems like everyone wants to fight us," Easton said. "People get liquored up and once they get that liquid courage they want to fight Raiders fans to prove they're hard or something. It's ridiculous."

During a media conference call Sunday, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said he was unaware of the violence during the game and is "saddened'' by it.

"...I feel bad for the people who got injured and people that had to see that, those in the stands and anybody that had to witness that,'' he said. "I feel bad we sponsor an event as an organization and those things happened, so I'm saddened.''

Anyone witnessing either crime can call the San Francisco police tip line at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and include "SFPD" in the beginning of the text.

The 49ers released a statement following the game, but only touched on the shooting.

"The San Francisco Police Department is investigating a shooting incident following Saturday's NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders outside Candlestick Park. No other information regarding the incident is available from the 49ers at this time."

The 49ers beat the Raiders 17-3 Saturday night in the bitter rivalry.
