The guy was a big improvement over what we had at punter, but was still in the bottom third in the league in net yardage last year. 40 yards of net yardage is really the barometer of acceptable performance and he finished at about 38.5 last year. Yes, but why he finished lower than 40 is the key. Was it because he was shanking punts? No, his gross average wouldn't have been so high if he was. Was it because he put too many punts in the EZ for touchbacks? Perhaps. Was it because the Jets' coverage units sucked (more likely)? I don't think Malone was the problem.
