The Jets have lost three starters and a key backup in free agency. Now, they're ready to call John Abraham's bluff.

According to Abraham's Baltimore-based agents, Anthony Agnone and Rich Rosa, the Jets have broken off talks on a long-term contract with their Pro Bowl defensive end and are willing to let other teams negotiate with Abraham until July 15.

"It really shows the player right to his face that, 'Hey, we'll use every effort we can to keep you for a year, but we're not going to make a commitment to you,' " Agnone said.

Abraham, who received the Jets' franchise designation last month, almost certainly will be a Jet one way or another this season. But things have gotten contentious.

Agnone said Abraham refused to sign the one-year tender worth $6.7 million, giving other teams until July 15 to sign him to an offer sheet. That seems wildly unlikely, considering that the compensation would be two first-round picks - the first of which could be in the upcoming draft.

It's all posturing, but posturing can get ugly. Not only did the Jets reject Agnone's long-term proposal, they didn't even make a counter-offer - and they yanked a proposal off the table that they made in November, Agnone said. The Jets declined comment through team spokesman Ron Colangelo.

Because they were not able to sign Abraham to a long-term deal by 4 p.m. yesterday, the Jets will not negotiate with him until after July 15. That's because they'd lose the franchise designation - for Abraham or anyone else - if they signed him to an extension without Abraham signing the one-year deal first.

It's complicated, but unless Abraham receives a blockbuster offer that the Jets do not match, he will have to sign the one-year deal at some point or risk a lengthy holdout. Once he signs it after July 15, the Jets and Abraham's agents can continue talks on a longer contract.

Basically, the Jets still hold the cards.

Another option would be to seek a trade for Abraham, as the Rams are doing with their franchise player, tackle Orlando Pace. That is not an option the Jets are currently considering.

In any event, Abraham will miss the offseason program and minicamps, a risk the Jets were well aware of when they franchised him. Rosa called the team's strategy "positioning more than anything."

It is believed that Sean Gilbert is the only franchise player to command the compensation price of two first-rounders - in 1998, when the Redskins sent the defensive tackle to Carolina. Gilbert struggled and eventually was released. Washington used one of its picks to select linebacker LaVar Arrington.

Notes & quotes: The Jets are quickly running out of options at tight end. Ken Dilger, who was next on their list, canceled his visit because he's not sure he wants to move his family to New York, said his agent, Mark Bartelstein ... The Jets have no interest in safety Pierson Prioleau, released yesterday by the Bills.

Interesting - who is the "better" player? Some athletic, but whiney, difficult hypocondriac like Abraham or an over-achieving, full throttle kind of player who puts team first, like Tedy Bruschi. Character DOES mean something.

That's why I really think the Pats D has taken a serious blow. Any Pats fan that denies that is fooling themselves.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Of all the hits the Patriots have taken this offseason, this will be the hardest to overcome.

we're loud, we're proud, get used to it!

Translation: We have nowhere else to go.

As to the topic, which was quickly turned into a thread about Tedy Bruschi, I think the Jets are playing this perfectly. Let Abraham and his agent get angry; they have no control over the Jets. If he threatens to hold out for the entirety of the season, we could simply say "well, you usually sit out half of it with a pussy injury, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal".

Please, Dallas, come to our rescue and give us some picks for this prima donna. We know you want him, Bill.
