Should Jets sign Dwight Freeney to boost their pass rush ? ? ?

Former All-Pro and Super Bowl Champion pass rusher Dwight Freeney has stated he would like to play in 2016. After a productive year with the  Arizona Cardinals  in 2015, should the Jets take a look at adding him this season? What does he have left in the tank? Let’s take a look. At 36 years old, Freeney is strictly a rotational player at this point of his career. With that being said, his production in limited snaps was impressive. He played 317 snaps in 2015, which amounted to 36.6% of Arizona’s total defensive snaps he was suited up for.

His burst and bend off the edge, especially in week 16 against the Green Bay Packers, was game changing:

In the play above he draws a hands to the face call which was declined as his pressure forces an interception anyway.

Later on in the game as the Packers trailed, Freeney was completely set loose on passing downs. He had three sacks in the second half, including a display of his vintage spin move:

While Don Barclay of the Packers was clearly overmatched in this game, Freeney was productive throughout the year. Below he gets the best of Andrew Whitworth, one of the league’s more solid pass protectors over the last half decade:

With Lorenzo Mauldin and rookie Jordan Jenkins penciled in to start on the edge, it wouldn’t hurt for the Jets to add a pass rusher strictly for passing downs. Jenkins can set the tone against the run right away, but easing him in as a rookie as a two down player will help both him and the Todd Bowles’ defense overall.

There is little risk to bringing in Freeney, a veteran presence alongside the Jets young outside linebacking core. He knows his role and most importantly, even at 36, he is still extremely productive.

Its funny, my initial reaction was no way, let Jenkins, Bishop, Mauldin, etc. get more opportunities to make an impact.

But if this team had a stud QB, it would pretty much be a SB contender, in which case, Freeney's veteran leadership could be huge in a SB run for the Jets.
