It looks as if the Jets are going with a youth movement at wide receiver.

The team began reducing its roster to 53 players on Saturday, and so far all three rookie wide receivers remain on the roster. The team cut both Kenbrell Thompkins and Jeremy Ross, veterans who were fighting for spots with the kids.

Rookies Jalin Marshall, Robby Anderson and Charone Peake have had strong training camps, and they are in position to make the team. Things can change, though, later Saturday or Sunday when the Jets can make waiver claims.

The Jets have cut 18 players and defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson will move to the suspended list at 4 p.m., leaving their roster at 56. The Jets still have three moves to make by 4 p.m.

One of those may be moving tackle Breno Giacomini to the Reserve/PUP list, which would keep him from counting against the 53. He would be out until at least Week 7 if they do that. Giacomini missed training camp with a back injury.

Of the cuts, the biggest surprise was fullback Tommy Bohanon. The 2013 seventh-round pick has been the team’s primary fullback since his rookie season. He played in all 16 games last year with four starts. Julian Howsare, a converted linebacker, is the only other fullback on the roster. He was seen as a long shot to make the roster.

The only other semi-big names cut were tight end Zach Sudfeld, who has been with the team since 2013, and linebacker Trevor Reilly, a 2014 seventh-round pick. Reilly was waived with an injury designation, so he could revert to the team’s injured reserve list.

The full list of the cuts:

FB Tommy Bohanon
TE Zach Sudfeld
OLB Trevor Reilly
WR Kenbrell Thompkins
WR Jeremy Ross
OLB Freddie Bishop
LB Taiwan Jones
TE Wes Saxton
CB Darryl Morris
S Doug Middleton
RB Antone Smith
DL Tarow Barney
CB Bryson Keeton
OL Mike Liedtke
DL Claude Pelon
CB Kevin Short
OL Craig Watts
WR Chandler Worthy

Howsare's spot on the final 53 is still a long shot IMO.  Not sure we'll carry a FB at all.

Sheldon would be a good short yardage blocker on the goaline ;)

Bohannon's lack of snaps (24%) and Howsare's history (college LBer) means he can get the odd rep at FB while offering better ST's play.  Also more athletic than Bohannon and looked pretty natural as a pass catcher in TC.

Fullbacks are a waste of a roster spot imo. If all they do is block,  I'd rather use a tight end in the backfield who can also be productive in other aspects of the game.

It's bad enough a guy like kellen Davis is on the field but with Bohannon it's like having 7 lineman.  If you want 7 lineman then just play 7 lineman.
