LMAO!

A second consecutive summer of swinging and missing, while Anders Lee appears headed elsewhere too

Despite being labeled the “front runner” at various points and reportedly offering the highest offerfrom any non-Columbus team, the New York Islanders have missed out on Blue Jackets free agent winger Artemi Panarin.

Worse? Instead of losing him to the Florida Panthers, a long-rumored destination along with Sergei Bobrovsky, the Russian winger is instead headed to the crosstown rival New York Rangers. The average annual value is expected to be around $11.6 million, according to reports.

Whoops!

Meanwhile, their two key remaining free agents, Anders Lee and Robin Lehner, appear to be on the way out. By one report, offers for Lee were in the $9 million average annual value range — probably a level worth passing on unless it’s on a shorter term.

I love Anders Lee, but I really don't want to see a deal anywhere near $60M.

Whatever the economics, the Islanders and Lou Lamoriello now need to move to Plan C and D, whatever those are. Maybe actually play more kids?

LL gonna have his hands full finding wingers to block MDC and JHS now. ?

Or maybe...our worst fears: stack up on a bunch of “veterans” who would add questionable value. We’ll see. I won’t say “I told you so” because you never know how this will all shake out, but this is basically the fear I had from the beginning of this wild chase: That the Isles would whiff on the big fish, while two key players walk, and a scramble for replacements follows.

hDg66G02_normal.jpg

FWIW, I really hate the idea of giving any goalie a long term, high dollar contract. But if you have to do it for whatever reason, better to also get Artemi Panarin in the process.

(I still think this is a complete longshot, but while we're all riffing)

I am terrified of a big swing-and-miss, the departure of remaining UFAs, followed by a long contract to some High Character Simmonds

What Panarin Brings to (the other) New York

Why would the Islanders risk so much to chase Panarin? In the eyes of the coach who loved him so, via Craig Custance of the Athletic:

“He had a unique skill set that was top, top end,” Quenneville said of their time together with the Blackhawks. “They had a unique chemistry, him and (Patrick Kane) Kaner. It was a privilege to watch those guys play on a daily basis. … We’ll see.”

Custance also quoted an NHL scout:

“Wherever he goes, he’s going to make whoever he plays with that much better,” he said. “He didn’t have a whole lot to play with in Columbus. He’s going to play with Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. That’s a massive upgrade.”

He is older — all unrestricted free agents are — but not Sergei Bobrovsky or (heh) David Backes old or Joe Pavelski old. He can be expected to be a significant positive contributor for at least half of this contract, and quite possibly more.

He has been very durable, averaging 80-plus games per season since coming over from the KHL at age 24 four seasons ago. (There is also the theory that for that reason he has less “mileage” on him, given the KHL’s lighter schedule, larger rinks, less wear, etc. That theory has merit but cannot be proven in any individual case.)

Rivalry Intensifies

The crosstown rivals’ rebuild got significant lottery help this spring, so the chances of both New York metro teams mattering at the same time has increased significantly.

As the crew over at Blueshirt Banter were writing early in the chase for Panarin:

While the long-term goal of perennial Cup contention hasn’t shifted no matter the outcome, just how quickly the Rangers expect to open that window will largely hinge on Panarin’s decision.

Bottom Line: Welp.

The Islanders risked a whole lot, and offered a lot of money — the highest bid, by some reports, except for Columbus — to land this summer’s top free agent draw.

Now they’ve missed while their captain also appears headed out the door.

Fans are going to remember this day, and not for happy reasons.

It’s possible that Lamoriello is good at the kinds of managerial things that don’t require touching the roster and no longer good at building a viable NHL roster without inheriting a bunch of great stuff to begin with. Missed out on going for it at the deadline, missed out at FA.

This was always a pipe dream. Gonna need a few more Barzals and a few less Komarovs before they get to that level. Barring some crazy trade, they're gonna be a worse team today than they were a month ago.

New York Rangers to Sign Artemi Panarin to Seven-Year Deal Worth $81.5 Million

The AAV of the deal is roughly $11.6 million a season

The New York Rangers are signing top free agent Artemi Panarin, and you could say the Breadman got paid.

Panarin is coming off a career year in which he tallied 87 points, 28 goals and 59 assists, in 79 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets. The newest Broadway Blueshirt went undrafted, and the 2018-19 season was just Panarin’s fourth in the NHL.

He signed with the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent in April of 2015. Prior to that, Panarin appeared in 263 KHL games where he posted a line of 76-107-183 (0.70 P/GP).

Since making his NHL debut in 2015, Panarin is eighth among all players in points (320), 23rd in goals (116), and 11th in assists (204).When broken down to just 5v5 situations, Panarin ranks 6thin total points (194), 21st in goals (69), and fourth in assists (125).

There is no doubt that Panarin is a star player who has had an incredible start to his NHL career, and he joins a Ranger squad chock full of youngsters who can learn from him as a player, especially countrymen wingers such as Vitali Kravtsov and Pavel Buchnevich.

The addition of Panarin means the team will need to make some more minor moves — similar to the Jimmy Vesey trade — in order to finalize deals with existing RFAs, but that’s an OK problem to have when you land someone like Artemi Panarin.

The Rangers’ rebuild certainly has been kicked into another gear, and this is going to be an even more entertaining team to watch next season.

New York Islanders Target Artemi Panarin Sign with New York Rangers

Artemi Panarin has signed with the New York Rangers. Now the New York Islanders have to head back to the drawing board.

It was a good few hours while it lasted, the New York Islanders were rumored to be the favored destination for UFA Artemi Panarin from 11 pm on Sunday till about 11 am Monday morning. But at the 11th hour, that favor changed to the New York Rangers.

Just before the free agency period officially opened, TSN’s Darren Dreger announced that Artemi Panarin was going to land with the Rangers.

What’s worse, is that he may have left money on the table to sign with the Rangers over the Islanders.

Strike Out, Again

It was reported that the New York Islanders were offering Artemi Panarin a deal worth somewhere between $12-12.5 million. The deal Panarin signed with the Rangers carries an AAV worth $11.642 million over seven years.

For the second year in a row, the New York Islanders have struck out on the biggest free agent in the market. First, it was John Tavares in 2018, and now it’s Artemi Panarin.

Not only does it suck to lose out on Artemi Panarin, but it also sucks that he moves to the Rangers of all teams. For the next seven years, the Islanders will come face-to-face with a player they just missed out on.

The Islanders now have to head back to the drawing board at the last minute to see what they can do in free agency. Anders Lee is likely gone, and now Artemi Panarin is out, Lou Lamoriello has to turn to plan C.

Can that plan include Mitch Marner? The RFA winger is still entertaining the notion of an offer sheet it seems. But with the cap hit he’ll likely command the four first rounders going back to Toronto as compensation could be too much for Lou to actually do.

If not, there isn’t much left out on the market that the New York Islanders can try and acquire. Hopefully, we aren’t in for an updated version of last season’s bottom six parade.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Report: Artemi Panarin, Rangers Agree on 7-Year, $81.5M Contract in Free Agency

Veteran winger Artemi Panarin will bring his scoring prowess to the New York Rangers after agreeing to a deal Monday.

Per Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada, Panarin's contract will be for seven years and $81.5 million.

Panarin spent the previous two seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 27-year-old set a career high with 87 points and 59 assists in 2018-19, leading the team in both categories and helping them win their first playoff series in franchise history.

Prior to joining the Blue Jackets, Panarin had a long path to the NHL after going undrafted in 2010. He spent five years in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, eventually signing a two-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks in April 2015.

In his first NHL season, Panarin finished second on the Blackhawks in goals (30), assists (47) and points (77). He won the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie and was named to the All-Star team in his second season.

The Blue Jackets were in a tricky financial spot this offseason. Panarin is one of five free agents for the team, leaving them with the possibility of up to $30.2 million in cap space

Despite making three straight playoff appearances, the Blue Jackets have just one series win to show for it. They finished last season outside the top 10 in goals scored (258) and goals allowed (232).

Panarin has proven his worth to Columbus over the past two seasons, but this was also his first real opportunity to score a significant and lucrative long-term deal.

For the Rangers, he'll provide some major scoring punch and is the cherry on top of a solid offseason that also included the acquisition of Kaapo Kakko, Jacob Trouba and Adam Fox.

Rangers sign Artemi Panarin as Islanders come up empty

The Bread Man is coming to Broadway.

After all the maneuvering and all the fretting, the Rangers got their man by signing 27-year-old Russian winger Artemi Panarin to a seven-year deal worth $81.5 million deal at the opening of free agency on Monday. Panarin definitely left money on the table from his former team, the Blue Jackets, and likely left bigger offers from the Islanders and Panthers.

But now he is reunited with the Rangers’ new team president, John Davidson, who spent the past seven seasons running the show in Columbus. The annual salary-cap hit just over $11.6 million was a risk Davidson was willing to take to advance this rebuilding process that began in earnest two seasons ago. It takes the club to a different level in terms of talent, with Panarin’s ability to make plays and score goals making him one of the biggest offensive threats in the league.

In 322 NHL games with the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets, the righty-shot has 116 goals and 320 points. In 27 career playoff games, he has nine goals and 26 points.

Suddenly, the postseason is not a pie-eyed goal for the Rangers this year, who have had one of their best offseasons in a long, long time. General manager Jeff Gorton was able to obtain top-four righty-shot defenseman Jacob Trouba in a trade with the Jets, and an expensive new deal for the restricted free agent is likely coming sometime soon. Just over a week ago, the club took Kaapo Kakko with the No. 2-overall selection in the draft, their highest pick ever.

They were also able to use some of their stockpiled draft picks — a second- and third-rounder — to trade for the rights to Harvard defenseman Adam Fox, who seems like he’s ready for the NHL. It also seems like the crop of recent prospects have matured rather well, especially No. 9-overall pick from 2018, Vitali Kravtsov, who had a tremendous prospects camp this past week up in Stamford, Conn.

Even just before free agency opened on Monday, Gorton was able to trade winger Jimmy Vesey and his $2.275 million cap-hit for one more year to the Sabres in exchange for a third-round pick. It helped clear a little bit of cap space, with Trouba, Pavel Buchnevich, Tony DeAngelo and Brendan Lemieux all restricted free agents without new deals.

Vesey had been drafted by the Predators in 2012, but made it clear he was never going to sign in Nashville, so they traded his rights to the Sabres for a third-round pick. But he never signed in Buffalo, either, closing to become a free agent and sign with the Rangers in the summer of 2016. So the Sabres have now spent two third-round picks and waited three years to get Vesey, who underwhelmed on Broadway while notching 50 goals and 90 points in 240 games.

Now that Panarin has made his decision, Gorton has to decide how he wants to proceed for the rest of this summer. The biggest issue would be with Chris Kreider, who is going into the final season of his contract with a $4.625 million cap hit. Either Gorton is going to extend the 28-year-old power-forward or trade him before the season starts.

Welcome to Broadway, Artemi Panarin.

NHL Network has reported the Rangers have signed Panarin to a seven-year contract, $81.5-million contract. The AAV will be right around $11.6 million.

Panarin had been rumored to be heading to Florida, the New York Islanders and possibly returning to the Columbus Bluejackets.

The addition of Panarin will immediately make the Rangers a playoff contending team. The team has previously signed Vitali Kravtsov, Igor Shesterkin and drafted the second overall pick in this year’s draft, Kaapo Kakko.

Jeff Gorton, along with John Davidson, is having one of the most successful offseason in recent years.

Rangers continue impressive offseason, secure Artemi Panarin with massive contract, per report

Panarin, 27, becomes the league's highest-paid winger

The New York Rangers got their man, and he happens to be the prize of this year's free agent class.

According to multiple reports, the Rangers have agreed to a contract with former Blue Jackets winger Artemi Panarin. The deal is reportedly for seven years and in the neighborhood of $81.2 million, per Larry Brooks of the New York Post. That would bring the AAV to around $11.6 million.

Panarin deal with Rangers will come in at around $11.6M per, Post is told

It's an expensive price to pay -- Panarin becomes the league's highest-paid winger, surpassing Patrick Kane's $10.5 million annual hit  -- but it apparently was not the most expensive offer. Panarin reportedly left money on the table to join the Rangers. Columbus reportedly made a huge offer (somewhere around eight years and $96 million-$100 million in total) at the 11th hour Sunday, and the New York Islanders were also believed to be in on the bidding war.

In fact, the Islanders were considered favorites to sign Panarin late Sunday, but for the second-straight year they open up free agency by getting spurned by the top free agent on the market.

Panarin is an elite winger who has steadily contributed for the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets since coming into the NHL four years ago. He's coming off a career-best season in which he scored 28 goals and had 87 points for Columbus. He has 320 points in 322 games over the course of his career.

Panarin, 27, will join a rebuilding Rangers team that has added several big-time pieces already this summer, including hyped Finnish prospect Kaapo Kakko (selected second overall in this year's draft), promising defensive prospect Adam Fox (trade with Carolina Hurricanes) and top-pairing defenseman Jacob Trouba (trade with Winnipeg Jets).

Panarin is an elite winger who has steadily contributed for the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets since coming into the NHL four years ago. He's coming off a career-best season in which he scored 28 goals and had 87 points. The 27-year-old has 320 points in 322 games over the course of his career. He'll command a huge payday in UFA and has been said to be interested in a big market team or a destination city.

Better and more stressful. Especially between the Rangers and Devils with Hughes vs Kakko and I think both those teams have brighter futures than the islanders. Will another trip to the finals be at stake?

All 3 teams have good young talent, front office and coaching.

Islanders kept their captain but lost their goalie.

Devils add Simmons, will be interesting to see what happens with Hall next year.

Add Caps and Penguins to the mix, and that division is going to be sick.

League is going to need to change the division winners automatically getting playoff seeds, because teams with more points are going to get screwed.

Yeah the metro is going to be stacked and the Rangers will be the best team in that division I have no doubt.
