It would serve them well to understand Watson’s future before FA begins. If Jason’s numbers on Watson are correct, a post June 1 trade designation would provide Houston with $10.5 mil in cap savings and $5.4 mil in dead money. If Houston is willing to follow the Rams/Detroit model & JD decides taking bad contracts is better than trading draft picks, Mercilus ($1.5 dead/$10.5 cap savings) or Cobb ($2.0 dead/$10.5 cap savings) could provide Houston with cap flexibility. Every GM & coach has “his players” that they like to bring in to have their back and keep an eye out in the locker room. Knowing their cap status before FA ( March 17) will help them signing players. New coaches can begin camp 46 days from now. If Watson is not going to report (which vets rarely do) the story will be Watson 24/7. Having this deal in place prior to FA will help Texans and Jets. If deal is not in place by then, JD reverts to plan B. which is attempting to sign FA they are interested in. Having Watson deal in place will help attract tier 1 free agent WR.
