FA Checklist - JD is on it

The oline ranked so low because they had thirteen different line ups over the season.  Make no mistake , some of the players were either below average or too inexperienced but the bigger problem was not being able to field the same starting line up game in and game out.  I believe they could’ve been ranked in the top half of the league.  Another point about losing fant and Moses is that fant was running into some injury issues and it could just be the jets weren’t offering enough money.  It takes two to tango when it comes to signing players.

That’s part of it. That excuse was used in 2022 also though.. Definitely can not be used 3 years in a row. But there is obviously very little talent on the OL. Lone gone are the days of OL anchors like mangold and Dbrick..

This is literally false. In fact JD hinted hard at the combine that they may view AVT as a tackle.

Amplifying my point. AVT has one season left basically. Playing him at LT simplifies so many things for the Jets and does not lock them into reaching for OT at 10. Playing AVT at G is a complete waste at this point IMO.

Correct! you got me! Amplify away! Fact is, none of us really know. Posting Sam Robinsons article (AFTER the combine) noting that Cimini suggests that the Jets prefer to keep AVT at G. You are right though. They have not 'made it clear'. I will edit that.

This year’s free agency and draft outcomes may dictate where the Jets place Alijah Vera-Tucker, who has shuttled between guard and right tackle over the past two seasons. But the team does have a preference for the former first-round pick.

USATSI_19196459-218x300.jpgAs injuries have piled up over the past two seasons, the Jets have opted to kick Vera-Tucker to right tackle. Not long after each move, a season-ending injury occurred. Joe Douglas praised Vera-Tucker’s versatility and noted it is a resource the team can use as it assembles its 2024 roster, but the team still wants the 2021 draftee to master one job.

Despite the Jets expressing interest in keeping Vera-Tucker at right tackle on a full-time basis, ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini points to an internal preference of the USC product returning to guard and staying there. The Jets have three starting spots to fill up front. If Vera-Tucker is moved back to guard, that mission will include two new tackles. Mekhi Becton is not expected to be re-signed.

Vera-Tucker has played fewer than 400 career snaps at RT, being moved because of injuries at tackle in the past two seasons. He suffered a torn triceps in 2022 and a torn Achilles last year; both injuries occurred in Denver. The Jets, who recently released Laken Tomlinson, will need AVT to remain upright as they break in a new O-line configuration following years of waiting on Becton to stay healthy.

Elsewhere on the Jets’ roster, they want to bring back both their 2023 specialists. The team would like to re-sign Greg Zuerlein and Thomas Morstead, Cimini adds. Zuerlein has been the Jets’ kicker for the past two seasons; he played out another one-year deal (worth $2.6MM) in 2023. Morstead came over on a one-year deal as well, rejoining the Jets after a season with the Dolphins.

After being a Cowboys cut in 2022, Zuerlein has settled in with the Jets. The former Rams specialist turned in his best season since an All-Pro 2017 campaign, making 35 of 38 field goal tries. The strong-legged kicker out of the Division II ranks is now a 12-year veteran who is now 36, but the Jets are interested in an all-late-30s ST corps. Morstead will turn 38 later this week.

USATSI_22171793-200x300.jpgThe Jets are also interested in retaining Jordan Whitehead, but Cimini offers that the two-year safety starter does not qualify as a high priority. A six-year veteran, Whitehead is only going into his age-27 season. The former Buccaneers Super Bowl starter intercepted four passes and broke up nine more last season; he has six picks as a Jet. With Kyle Dugger and Antoine Winfield Jr. off the market, players like Whitehead stand to be a bit more appealing. The former Bucs fourth-rounder played out a two-year, $14.5MM deal.

Zuerlein and Morstead will certainly be much cheaper to retain, but if the Jets let Whitehead walk, they will need to fill a starting role. Tony Adams, who usurped Adrian Amos for the other starting role last year, remains under contract. Ashtyn Davis and Chuck Clark, a 2023 trade acquisition who missed the season due to injury, are also due for free agency.

You expect stubborn JD to finally admit his failures and change way he thinks ? Simpson signing highlights EXACTLY what he’s done his ENTIRE time as Jets gm. Refuse to sign the top guys who want the most. Instead sign a bunch of jags for lot less, and somehow think can turn water into wine with them. Obviously his thinking has failed miserably, but hey, at least he is being consistent ha.

Tomlinson got a monster contract and was considered a top guard.  Lawson got a big deal. He signed a corner for $75 MM.  I would say Rodgers was a top guy.  Sure there are others.  Point is Douglas problem isn't that he is cheap.  His problem is he doesn't recognize that the free agent is cashing in on what he did for someone else.  That smart GM's sign difference makers.  Other than the 2022 draft, his picks have been horrible too.  He is guilty of lots of things but not of being cheap.

Simpson allowed 1 sack in 17 starts and 1120 snaps.  With our limited cap and the amount of gaping holes, he can't afford to shoot the works on one star.  Honestly, the signings fill gaps with what look like competent players.  We lost because the O-line was incompetent.  Because Whitehead led the league in touchdowns surrendered and missed tackles.  Because we couldn't stop the run.  And most of all, we lost because we didn't have a competent backup quarterback.  He filled 4 gaping holes so far.  Of course, he will get heat if he doesn't sign at least one starting offensive tackle.  It would be nice if he got a second or a #2 receiver.

There are other holes, but this defense can carry us to the playoffs if they fill those 3 remaining priorities.  Needs to visit Moseley and JFM to get the space he needs.  Moseley built his stats on a ton of tackles downfield.  He has a  below average impact on Goal line stops, tackles for loss and big 3rd down stops.  As a free agent, he is worth half what he is making.  Fix it JD and get the OT we need.
