Knicks make 5-year, $30M offer to Wizards' Jeffries

ESPN.com news services

A month ago, Isiah Thomas said he was "very comfortable" with the state of the New York Knicks' roster. Evidently "comfort" is only a temporary state of being.

On Friday, the Knicks offered Washington Wizards restricted free agent Jared Jeffries their mid-level exception, a five-year deal worth around $30 million. The Wizards will have seven days to match the offer once the team officially receives the paperwork.

"We have not received an offer, and if or when we do, we will have a week to explore all our options to determine our course of action," Wizards president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld told the New York Post.

Jeffries, listed as a guard/forward, played shooting guard, small forward, power forward and even center for the Wizards last year. The fourth-year player out of Indiana averaged 6.4 points per game and 4.9 rebounds while playing 25.4 minutes.

The Knicks already have four other small forwards -- David Lee, Quentin Richardson, Jalen Rose and first-round draft pick Renaldo Balkman -- but at 6-foot-11, Jeffries provides a different look for the team.

"We recognize they have a right to match," Jeffries' agent Andy Miller told the New York Times. "But hopefully, they take into consideration some of the human factors of it. In Jared's mind, he'd be better suited to playing in New York and for the Knicks."

Last season, New York stumbled to a 23-59 record -- second-worst in the NBA and equaling the most losses in club history. On June 22, the team fired coach Larry Brown just one season into a five-year deal worth a reported $50 million.

Thomas, who also serves as the Knicks' GM, replaced Brown. In his only other NBA coaching stint, Thomas went 131-115 in three seasons with the Indiana Pacers. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

At least Jeffries is a player who can play all the forward spots, and does not need the ball in his hands to be effective. On this team, that is a rarity.

To bad Washington will probably match. They will still be under the cap anyway.

This is why the Knicks are in the toilet. GIving $30 million to a defensive specialist who couldnt throw the ball in the ocean when you can get the same production on both ends of the court from David Lee for dirt cheap. But Isia-uh thinks Lee is a PF for some reason.

One minute Thomas wants to play his 3 crown jewels (Frye, Lee, and Robinson) the next minute he is bringing in guys to replace them.

If Thomas planned on bringing in Jeffries then why the heck did he draft Blackman who is essentially another high energy defensive swingman?

No plan whatsoever.

First off, I believe Isaiah never in his wildest dreams thought Jefferies would be available for the mid-level. So he went ahead with Blackman.

In addition, Blackman is a 3 or 2. Jefferies can defend at the 3, 4 or the 5.

Dude why waste your time .One guy says something and the sheep that inhabit this board run with it.

What these people fail to realize is Balkman can defend guys like Dwayne Wade and Crawford, and Jeffries can defend guys like Melo and guys like Frye. It's something the Knicks have never ever had,not even when they had oakley. Both guys also hit the offensive and defensive rebounding board with athleticism.

I think Lee is also a guy who can defend the 3 and the 4, which is why giving $30 million to Jeffries was a waste of money.

Ever heard the term foul trouble. It happens sometimes, and now the Knicks have the ability to replace an effective defender with someone of near equal talent.

Why you are being a condescending tool, when you are not even paying attention to me I dont know. Listen Dr. Jack Ramsey. You are talking about what Jeffries brings to the table and I am not denying that - he can defend and defend well. I am talking about the amount of coin we gave him. I still do not think he is worth the money. YOu dont give borderline starters/defensive swing men who cant throw the ball in the ocean $30million just because David Lee may get into foul trouble. The Wizards agree - thats why they didnt match.

Goodbye.

Coin is irrelevant to the Knicks. They are way over the cap and there is no relief in sight. Therefore, they have to get the best players available for the exemptions that they hold. There is no hope to get under that cap. The last chance they had was when Layden was here and had McD and others who were coming off the cap in the next couple of years and drafted some Europeans who might have panned out in the future. Isiah came in and traded that away for the opportunity to be swept in the playoffs by the Nets. Acted like a genius for making the playoffs when the team should have taken its medicine and sucked for that year and then started over instead of continuing to suck with no chance to stop sucking in the near future.

Amen to that. The Knicks did not need Jared Jeffries especially when David Lee is better at playing the 3 than the 4. At least Jeffries is a competent player who can give you something unlike oaf Jerome James who got a $30 mil contract and is worthless on the court.

That being said I think the Knicks actually have a chance to be, dare I say it, decent next year? But in order for this to happen Isiah absolutely must play the Nate, Frye and Lee. And stick with a friggin rotation please.

I could realy see a scenario where the Knicks suck next year, Thomas gets fired, Dolan hires another incompetent stooge and that stooge trades Nate, Frye and Lee for old scrubs with huge contracts. Nate, Frye and Lee end up becoming all-stars on other teams. You're already seeing that **** play out with Jackie Butler though he won't be an all-star he will be a good player for the Spurs.

I'm with you here.

The Knicks have enough guys who can only be effective when they have teh ball in their hands. We need more guys like Jefferies to be a decent team. I am all for this signing. I have seen enough of him play on TV to know that he will be a sterling asset in NY.
