Mattingly explained Sheff to a tee

Don Mattingly just explained Gary Sheffield better than anyone has ever explained him, and he did it with very few words

When asked what makes Sheff such a dangerous hitter, Donnie Baseball said the following ....

"He's never over-matched

Doesn't matter how hard a pitcher throws or how good his stuff is, Gary is never over-matched

That may not be the case with some guys ... maybe they have trouble with hard throwers or certain pitches ... but Gary Sheffield never looks over-matched"

BULLSEYE!!

Yes, there is also the incredible bat speed and what have you, but IMO this explained Gary Sheffield's PRIMARY STRENGTH as a hitter better than any explanation I have ever heard or read ... ABSOLUTE BULLSEYE ... Sheff NEVER looks over-matched at the plate ... that is SO FRIGGIN SIMPLY, and yet SO FRIGGIN PROFOUND

When Donnie said it ... Just now ... I was like ... YES, YES, THAT'S IT, HE'S RIGHT!!

I have seen Arod looked over-matched at times, and many other GREAT HITTERS ... but I NEVER see Sheff looking over-matched ... even when he makes an out ... even on those rare occasions when he strikes out ... I NEVER Get the feeling he is over-matched

BULLSEYE by Donnie Baseball =D>

Another reason why Don Mattingly is the greatest hitting coach in the history of the majors. I mean, who else could possibly be responsible for this Yankee offense?

That is so true. Sheffield is never overmatched or intimidate.

See if you read between the lines here, Donnie's inference is obvious

What he is saying, in effect, is this ...

Gary doesn't only feast on bad and mediocre pitching ... he is the type of exceptional hitter who can also do damage verses GREAT PITCHING

That's what makes Sheff such a feared and dangerous hitter ... he also hits GREAT PITCHING ... or a GOOD PITCHER and make a GREAT PITCH, really hit his spot, and Gary can still smash it

Also, I don't care if you throw 100+ MPH ... the fastball you can throw by Gary Sheffield has not been invented

While he is NOT a DEAD RED HITTER {i.e. crushes the fastball, but struggles verses breaking balls} ... he is still a fastball hittiing mofo like the best DEAD RED HITTERS who ever lived

Sheff looked overmatched game 4,5,6 and 7 in last years ALCS. So yes, there are times he is overmatched.

GS, I didn't say he never goes into a slump ... ALL HITTERS go into slumps, and Gary is no exception ... last year the Yankees went into a collective "team slump" at the worst possible time

But when Gary is just threading water ... not slumping or not going insane ... just hitting at his normal speed ... he never looks "over-matched" ... MAKES OUTS, but never looks "over-matched"

And there is a difference, but it's a very subtle difference .. one you can only notice if you watch a hitter often

Arod, on occasion, looks over-matched ... and he's a first ballot HOF lock

Gary, who may not make it on the first ballot, never looks over-matched

IMO Donnie Baseball is 100% correct

BTW, Donnie was more like Sheff than Arod before he hurt his back ... another guy who never looked over-matched, even verses GREAT PITCHING ... maybe that's why he knows the difference, and knows what it looks like when he sees it?

I'll explain Garroid Sheffield to a tee.

Take one clubhouse cancer, add steroids, add the most annoying batting stance ever seen, subtract the ability to stay on one team for a long period of time due to extremely unpleasant demeanor, add more steroids, subtract the interest of about 29 other major league baseball teams, add one R Kelly porno tape, and finally, add a trail of receipts from BALCO for packages delivered to his doorstep, subtract the ability to trade him due to his own vociferous refusal to let you trade him.

Sit back and watch him NOT deliver in the clutch (games 4,5,6 and 7) and listen to him complain about his contract........that he negotiated himself!!!
