Home Computer Network Question...

I know there are lots of tech experts here.

I tried to network my laptop and desktop computers.

Both are running Windows XP, so I ran the wizard on each of them. Both now show up in the workgroup on the desktop, but I can't access the laptop from there. The laptop shows nothing in the workgroup, at all.

The desktop is connected to the router by ethernet cable. The laptop connects wirelessly. Both access the Internet ok.

What am I missing?

Bob:

Not sure what the ultimate goal is here...if they can get on the internet okay, what else are you looking to do? From the laptop you can ping the others IP address to confirm connectivity.

From the command prompt: C:> ping 192.x.x.x That will tell if if there is a physical connection.

I am assuming that you want to share files. If they can both access the internet they are networked. It may be as simple as no drive being shared.

By default each will only be able to see the others shared drives. In windows explorer if you right click on a directory and go to properties you will see a SHARE tab. Under that tab you can configure a share name.

I can provide more info if that helps.
