Jackson might join boss with Jets

With the New York Jets now planning to announce Rex Ryan as their new head coach, the pieces should quickly fall into place for Hue Jackson, who reportedly is on Bengals coach Marvin Lewis' radar.

The Baltimore Sun reported on Sunday that Jackson, who was receivers coach with Cincinnati from 2004-06, could be brought back by Lewis, this time as the offensive coordinator. Jackson left the team in 2007 to become offensive coordinator at Atlanta and was quarterbacks coach with the Ravens this past season.

Jackson has received much credit for the development of rookie Joe Flacco. The Ravens advanced to the AFC championship game before losing at Pittsburgh on Sunday night.

Ryan, who was Baltimore's defensive coordinator the past four seasons, agreed in principle to take over the Jets and will be introduced at a news conference on Wednesday.

Ryan is considering asking Jackson to come along to New York to serve as his offensive coordinator, but he is also weighing retaining Brian Schottenheimer, who was on Eric Mangini's staff the past three seasons. Schottenheimer has one year left on his contract and was considered a head coaching candidate with the Jets until Ryan's convincing interview with owner Woody Johnson last Sunday.

Should Jackson return to Cincinnati, he would have plenty of familiarity with the team. He is credited with the development of wide receivers Chad Ocho Cinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh and recruited Carson Palmer when he was at Southern California as offensive coordinator from 1997-2000.

A move to the Bengals would also reunite Jackson with defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who held the same position with Atlanta in 2007. With Carson Palmer out for three-fourths of the season last year and an inconsistent running game, the Bengals were in the bottom five of most major offensive categories.

Bob Bratkowski has been the Bengals' offensive coordinator since 2001.
