Both sides are working hard to push through a one-year contract. Indications are that Pettitte will receive less guaranteed money than the $10 million the Yankees originally had on the table for two months before he turned it down. Pettitte went 14-14 with a 4.54 ERA for New York last season, earning $16 million in the process. Should have taken the $10 while you had a chance. He'll probably get an incentive ridden contract. Scott Dierking
Haha, I knew that sounded off. Thanks. Andy probably has to have a hell of year to reach $12. Good contract for the Yankees. Probvably just inning related, which he has given. I don't believe you are allowed to give incentives base on statistics. Is that right?

Is that right? That's correct. It can be inning related, or awards. Maybe he can earn another $1 million if he is 3rd place in CY Young voting, or wins the ALCS MVP, stuff like that. That gets him where the offer was originally and is attainable based on history, and then there are some other sweeteners that make it more difficult. Good deal all around, then. Vicious89x
I'm loving this deal. I am always a supporter of "incentive" deals. Not that Andy doesn't try, it just motivates him to do the best he can. Plus it helps us by solidifying our Rotation CC Wang Burnett Andy Joba
NIGHT STALKER
Pettitte, Yankees near 1-year dealComment Email Print ESPN.com news services The New York Yankees and Andy Pettitte are close on a deal that will bring the veteran left-hander back for a year, Major League Baseball sources told Buster Olney on Monday. The deal, sources told Olney, could be done as soon as Monday afternoon. It would pay Pettitte nearly $6 million, with incentives that could make it worth as much as $12 million. Pettitte was 14-14 for the Yankees last season with a 4.54 ERA. He started 33 games. Pitching with a sore shoulder, he was 2-7 with a 6.23 ERA in his final 11 starts and missed his last turn of the season. It was his second season back in New York after three seasons with the Houston Astros. Pettitte began his career with the Yankees, pitching his first nine big league seasons in pinstripes. After last season, indications were that Pettitte and the Yankees wanted to make a deal, but were unable to come to terms on a dollar figure -- until talks heated up this weekend. Pettitte earned $16 million last season. If he signs, Pettitte would join a projected starting rotation featuring CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain. Morrissey
We're going to have to DFA someone to make room for Pettite, I'd assume Dan Giese

Morrissey
It's official. http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090126&content_id=3772722&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy NEW YORK -- Andy Pettitte is still a Yankee. Yankees GM Brian Cashman held a conference call with Pettitte on Monday afternoon to announce that they agreed to a one-year contract, allowing the veteran to help open the Yankees' new stadium as a member of the rotation. Discussions between Pettitte's representatives and Cashman had continued for weeks. The 36-year-old's agents, Randy and Alan Hendricks, advised Pettitte that the Yankees' earlier $10.5 million offer for one year represented too large of a pay cut from the $16 million he earned in each of the last two seasons. According to the Associated Press, Pettitte has accepted a base salary of $5.5 million, with innings-pitched and days-on-the-roster incentives that could raise the value of the contract to $12 million. That problem appears to have been solved by the Yankees agreeing to include performance-based incentives. According to the Associated Press, Pettitte has accepted a base salary of $5.5 million, with innings-pitched and days-on-the-roster incentives that could raise the value of the contract to $12 million. The left-hander said repeatedly last year that he wanted to be in uniform when the Yankees officially complete their move across the street to the new Yankee Stadium, and has said that he does not see himself pitching in another uniform. In 2008, Pettitte was 14-14 with a 4.54 ERA in 33 starts. The veteran has logged at least 200 innings in four straight seasons, and five of his last six. But he faltered down the stretch, going 2-7 with a 6.23 ERA over his last 11 starts -- including a victory over the Orioles in the final game at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 21. In the time span following the Yankees' initial proposal to Pettitte, the club has signed free agents CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira for a combined $423.5 million.
