I keep getting messages that my PC is running low on disk space and need to uninstall some programs. I uninstalled several rarely used small programs, but I keep getting the same message.

I noticed that I have 4 Java update programs installed, but each update takes up over 100MB of space each. It says I rarely use these programs.

Can I uninstall these or do I need them? This is my work PC (I'm in sales), and I don't do any web development or anything of the sort (mostly PDFs, spreadsheets, word docs, etc.) but I don't want to screw anything up by uninstalling things that the PC requires.

Thanks.

How big a hard drive have you filled up? if you've got years worth of PDFs and other work documents on there, it might be worth your while to back them up onto a couple disks And get them off the hard drive.

That said, I think you'd be safe dumping those Java updaters. If your browser needs a new version of Jave, it'll alert you and you can download it then.

Keeping your porn on a thumb drive instead of the work computer would probably be a good idea, too. :D

It's a 20GB C: drive. I dumped the Java updaters and now have 185MB of free space, which still isn't a lot.

It also says I have a 55GB D: drive with 54GB of free space. Can I transfer documents to this drive to free up space on C:?

BTW, all of my porn is on my personal laptop. :)

You could always compress the programs which should cut their size roughly in half. Then if you need them just uncompress them. If you have any text files on your drive compressing them should cut their size down to 1/5 the original.

You might try looking around for space to save. Many browsers took off the space limit on disk caches years ago, I once saved almost a gigabyte when I erased the browser's disk cache.

Erasing unneeded fonts, printer drivers and language support files is standard advice, along with jokes about porn.

On some computers you can have a gigabyte of printer drivers installed you don't even need.

You could also check if your computer is erasing log files on schedule. Some computers are set up to erase logs at a certain day of the month late at night. If your computer is never on at night they never get erased.

Just an fyi, it is always a good idea to have at least 10% of the drive free, loading up like that can mess with performance.

I'm assuming your C and D drives are partitions of the same physical drive. if so, that's an odd way to partition them. In any event, I see no reason why you could not move stuff into the (relatively) vast wilderness of the D drive.

Will give it a try.

That's what I hear. I can't even defrag the drive without 200MB.

I only know how to do some of what you say. For example, how do I erase the browser's cache? I use Chrome almost exclusively.
