Divisional Playoff Matchups/Predictions

NY Jets at New England

As far as mismatches go, this sure is an extraordinarily hyped one. While the Jets will no doubt play better than they did in their Week 13 fiasco, that's not saying much, as they likely couldn't turn in another showing that poor even if they tried.

Just think of all the firsts that will likely need to happen for New York to win tomorrow. The Patriots will have to score fewer than 30 points for the first time since Week 9. Tom Brady will have to throw his first pick since Week 6. Bill Belichick will have to lose in New England for the first time since last season's playoffs (and just the second time since Week 13 of 2008).

The advantages are hard to find for the Jets. Their greatest strength, their lock-down cornerbacks, could end up being easily neutralized by Brady. Even if Gang Green manages to take Wes Welker and Deion Branch out of the game, something they did not come close to doing in Week 13, Brady will still have Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Danny Woodhead and Brandon Tate to look to. He's not the kind of quarterback that is easily ruffled when his favorite targets are taken away. Like Drew Brees, he locks onto no one and involves everyone.

The Jets' second potential salvation, New England's porous secondary, also has a touch of gray: it will encourage Mark Sanchez to throw. If there's one certainty through the first two years of Sanchez's career, it's the more he throws, the less good things seem to happen.

The endless press build up to this game has been fun, but is obscuring two very simple truths: New England is an extraordinarily good team, and New York is a very average one.

- Prediction: Patriots 28 - Jets 14

I hope we're just as average this Sunday.
