The Jets want to sign linebacker David Harris to a long-term deal. Harris wants to sign a long-term deal with the Jets. When the lockout ended, it was just a matter of getting it done.

The two sides have opened negotiations, according to a person with knowledge of the communication between the sides. That person requested anonymity because talks are supposed to be kept private.

Harris is currently signed to a franchise tender worth slightly more than $10 million. A long-term deal would give him the security he wants and give the team salary cap relief.

"I'm pretty sure that will get done pretty soon," Harris told reporters today. "I don't want to get into it, but it's going to get done."

Harris has always said he would like to finish his career as a Jet.

The other members of the so-called "Core Four" -- D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis -- signed long-term deals last summer. The rules of the uncapped year in 2010 prohibited the team and Harris from reaching a fair deal.
