The Pro-Day Progress Thread (Manning-Free zone)

Recommended Posts

At the time of this posting there is/was 13 Manning related threads. If you would like to discuss Peyton, Payton, Manning, his family, his current whereabouts, his best fit, or compare him to anybody on any roster...please find the appropriate thread and post it there.

Don't be the douche who brings him in here. I designate this a Manning Free Zone. Thanks.

That being said,

Players not invited to the Combine, or those who did not test (or tested poorly) get an opportunity to show of their mad skills at their school's pro-day. This thread is designed to keep track of the different slides and rises of players we may have interest in.

This year's pro-day schedule seems more convoluted than usual. 14 schools held their prodays on Tuesday...17 schools on Wednesday, and 20 go on Thursday. WTF? How do you expect to get your players exposure to NFL coaches when they can't be in two places at once? Poor show, schools!!

Here's the schedule

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/football/nfl/02/20/pro.day.schedule.ap/index.html

Today 3/7:

Alabama, California, California-Davis, Colgate, Eastern Washington, Fordham, Fort Valley, Kent State, Kentucky, Louisville, Northern Colorado, Oklahoma State, Southern California, Texas A&M, UTEP, Wisconsin, Weber State

Reports of Interest.

USC

-Matt Kalil is legit. Still a top-5 pick (likely goes #3)

-Nick Perry does not have LB skills. Today's performance has him slated as a 4-3 DE. or strict rush linebacker in a 3-4. He does not have the COD skills which translate to an everydown OLB.

Alabama

-Dre Kirkpatrick is rising. He is fast, not quick, but has the size suited for slot-corner duties and he is slated to be the 2nd CB taken. (in the teens-twenties.)

-Dont'e Hightower just made some money today. His COD and linebacker drills were remarkable for a man his size...He looked really good.

-Upshaw is a turd. He didn't perform today because of a boo-boo. Barron and Richardson also, did not participate (but that was expected)

Wisconsin

-Nick Toon ran in the low 4.5s

Texas A&M

-Cyrus Gray looked good, but wore the wrong shoes and posted poor times in the cone-drill and short shuttle.

-WR, Jeff Fuller (6'4, 224) ran a 4.53. Some think he should add weight and convert to TE.

Apparently Oklahoma State is holding their pro day on Friday.

Do you know when the qb from Tennessee is going to be throwing so we can see him?

Tennesee's pro day is 3/16.

Here's the report from Knoxville,

Quarterback Jonathan Crompton (6-3 ¼, 222) ran 4.87 and 4.89 in the 40-yard-dash, 4.39 in the short shuttle and 7.02 in the three-cone drill. Crompton also posted a 31.0 vertical jump and 8.10 broad jump. He reportedly looked impressive during passing drills.

dick.

Well played, but you only have yourself to blame for that one. If you really thought you could get away with that little "talking to" at the beginning of your thread without some sort of backlash, on JN of all places, you really were only kidding yourself. You pretty much guaranteed yourself infinitely more references to "you know who" in this thread than there would have been otherwise.

yeah I know (I was secretly running an experiment to see how long it would take).

Besides, we didn't have a pro day thread yet and thought the board could use one.

3/8...Today we have

Alabama State, Buffalo, Clemson, Colorado, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Alabama, Northwestern, Ohio, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Utah State, Washington, West Texas, Western Kentucky, Wofford, Wyoming, Youngstown State

Miami...sorry, "THE U" has a lot of team speed. It will be interesting to see if Rex heads down to Miami to see some players.

Perry's explosiveness places him firmly as a strong DE/OLB propsect. The whole COD thing can be worked on if the guy has everything else a team wants...which Perry does...it's a physical attribute that workout and flexibility programs can make a nice little dent in. Not to mention that 9/10 DE/OLBs in the NFL (let alone the draft) have that knock...it's the new "that 330+ pound DT is LAZY. Why's he getting tired out there!?!" knock.

Anyway his mass, vertical, and broad jump put him in a class with guys like Merriman, Orakpo, and Woodley.

I don't know, Gato.

I think first round picks should play right away, without major work. Maybe, MAYBE as a second round project with upside. But I think he'd be better served going to a legit 4-3 team. He has had time to do flexibility thingies before his pro day to perform better at those LB drills (The more attractive you are to more teams, the better chance of getting drafted higher--right?) The fact of the matter is, he is more comfortable moving forward than dancing around in space; and you know what, he looks incredible moving forward.

I just don't think he's our guy. Not at 16. Not in our current scheme.

Didn't say he won't play right away...just that physically while he's in the NFL he'll have to evolve a little...if he puts the work in it'll happen.

He could/should be a standout pass rusher from Day 1.

He didn't have as much time as you think...and he'd have years in the NFL. No one was drafting Orakpo or Suggs or Merriman for their flexibility and amazing COD skills.

In case you didn't catch it in it's own thread. Mike T and Rex attended the pro day for Clemson thursday afternoon.

Speculation for who they were there to see ranges from their DT (Thompson) TE (ugh, Allen) and other lesser known LB prospects that put up some great numbers.

Also of note, Rex Ryan was running the LB drills for Andre Branch, (6'4, 260) Mayocks #3 rated OLB.

(here's Rex throwing the football, right around :42)
