if the Jets draft Perry and he only is on the field for 3rd and Long, isn't that Maybin's role?

I agree that the sack upside of Perry or Mercilius is better than that of Ingram or Upshaw.

but the latter two are better overall football players. The Jets need LB starters more than it needs 3rd and long DPRs.

Agreed. How do you like McClellin as a potential LB starter? Very versatile so he seems like he could be a fit. Sounds like he might go in the late first, but there have certainly been prospects in the past who have gained steam and not gone as early as expected on draft day. If they go in another direction in the first and he's there in the second, do they pounce? Or is that not even a realistic scenario?

i think it's very realistic that he's there in the 2nd and I also think he's a little overrated when people mock him late 1st. He made alot of plays at Boise, but not alot of plays at the Senior Bowl practices... couldn't really get off blocks. Don't get me wrong he's a great athlete but alot to learn to be a 3-4 backer. i would compare him to a slightly less athletic Conner Barwin.

since we are talking LB... he probably goes between the Jets rd 1 and the Jets rd 2 but Dont'a Hightower has the ability to play 3-4 OLB. He's 260 and runs a legit 4.6 that's as good a starting point as any.

I'd hope the Jets would seriously consider Hightower

Maybin's on a one-year deal for $1.26mm. His presence shouldn't preclude us from drafting anyone.

I have no idea what this means.

It's actually a multi year deal but the point is he only has value in certain situations. That's what a Nick Perry would be. Pass rush specialist, useless at everything else until year 3 or 4.

mercilus is known to turn down his motor when the run comes. Perry too. Alot of these so called sack masters are not good overall players. Like how early Johnny Abe used to be. a force on 3rd down but you run right at him on 1st down. Upshaw and Ingram can stand up on day 1 and make tackles. they even cover a little. I don't have faith in mercilus or perry to make an impact... unless it's a pass rush situation.

You've completely lost me. Perry's motor is fine and every available metric projects him as a no-risk stud. Upshaw's slow as molasses and couldn't cover a corpse with a blanket.

This is all academic since Ingram is the only actual possibility out of this group.

this is what happens when only use combine or pro day workouts to evaluate a player. put pads on upshaw he's a better football player than perry. the production doesn't lie. he's got more sacks for example.
