Breaking Down The CB Situation

It’s been a rough week for Jet fans, as two of the teams top cornerbacks, Dee Milliner and Dexter McDougle, suffered serious injuries:

This news has left many members of JetNation wondering who will step up to fill the void left in the defensive backfield. This post will outline the current CBs on the Jets roster, and speculate on which players will make the biggest impact.

Dimitri Patterson - The Jets acquired this oft injured veteran through free agency earlier in the  year. Patterson needs to prove he can stay healthy before he can be expected to make a substantial impact.

Darrin Walls – Walls, a former undrafted free agent and Atlanta Falcon, started for the Jets at times last season. He seems like the most logical choice to pick up the slack at cornerback, but, at this time, has not been guaranteed a starting role.

Antonio Allen - Allen is listed as a safety, but has recently earned some reps at cornerback in practice. Rex Ryan has not been secretive in his plans to include Allen in the cornerback rotation. Rich Cimini reports that the third year Jet will start as a corner in New York’s next preseason game:

Ras-I Dowling – The former Patriot, and recent Jet addition, will be looking to make an impact in our depleted secondary. Dowling has not done much in his pro career, but this cornerback situation may be a legitimate chance for once highly regarded prospect to prove his worth.

Jeremy Reeves – As a former Iowa State Cyclone and undrafted free agent, Reeves will be looking to earn some first team reps. Let’s hope Reeves can overcome the injury woes that forced him to sit out the 2013 season.

Kyle Wilson – Is there any Jet fan out there that does not consider this former first rounder a bust? The Jets selected the Boise State product in the 2010 draft following an AFC championship appearance, and, so far, he has not lived up to expectations. It would be nice to see Wilson perform at an elite level as a starting corner, but he likely remain as the teams nickel back.

Ellis Lankster – Lankster is a respected special team player who has recorded two career interceptions. It would not be the craziest thing in the world to see Ellis, who recently switched his number to Cromartie’s old #31, hustle his way into some well deserved playing time.

LeQuan Lewis – On Tuesday the Jets signed this former CFL player in hopes of adding some temporary depth, as reported by ProFootballTalk:

In short, the state of the Jets defensive backfield is in disarray, but not without hope. The best case scenario for the Jets would include a swift return by Dee Milliner, who still has much to prove. Even if Milliner does regain health quickly, it will be up to one or more of the above-mentioned players to rise to the occasion, and provide help to this injury-riddled position.

I don't think I am on board with this assessment.  You completely left off 6th rounder Brandon Dixon and Johnny Patrick who was a former 3rd round pick, has started games for the Saints and Chargers and has never been on the street.  WIlson may well be a bust, but he was ahead of everybody on this list including Walls last season.  Lankster and Allen have been working with the ones, but that might be so that Wilson doesn't have to move around and Walls can stick with the twos.  I would imagine that they will either go with more matchup oriented covers - Allen vs. bigger guys, Lankster vs. smaller, quicker, etc., play more man under with S help.  A couple of posters pointed out that a bigger guy like Allen can be very effective there and his lack of elite speed will not be a problem with the over the top help. People keep listing Lewis as a CFL player, but he had an INTs in 8 games for the Cowboys and Bucs in 2012.  Ras-I Dowling is made out of glass.  Same as Patterson, probably worse.  We hope we catch lightning, but it is not likely.

Actually if you look at it the JETS have good depth at this position.

No team in the NFL is ready to absorb the loss of potential Top 2 out of 3 CB's on their depth chart.

That's why I don't get all the hand wringing over Idzik. Just how many starting CBs can be carried on a 53 man roster without leaving holes at another position? It's pretty simple stuff.

To be fair, I think most of the hand wringing is just simply that Patterson has looked awful which means he either sucks or is hurt.  Hurt again or hurt still.  Either was a likely outcome and he is getting actual money.  That bothers everybody.  I still hold out hope for him and I think we will be better getting Cro out of here because while he still has some value, he isn't the CB they expect and I think he needed a change of scenery.

How many teams

Yikes, that is a scary list right there. Not a single, solid vet in the group. Wilson probably comes closest... LOL.

How many teams lose two of their top 3 CBs and still have 7 guys that have started games in the NFL?  I wish the author would post because I was not very tactful in my first response, but the list omits our 6th round pick and Johnny Patrick who started some games for the Chargers last year - they made the playoffs.

Really...wow  I must have been reading another board.

The whole Idzik is cheap mantra is based on him not signing any of the "marquee" FA's.

I wouldn't exactly place mcdougle ahead of Patterson, walls, lankster, or Wilson just yet. we heard a few positive tweets about him in camp and he looked decent in a few snaps in a pre season game. wasn't exactly a lock to man the right side. too bad he got injured as we may never know what kind of player he could have turned out to be. there is more to depth beside having live bodies. they need to be able to step in and play. only time will tell, obviously, but it doesn't fare well that Antonio allen is one starting cb on Saturday. or maybe they just want to see him in live action incase another cb goes down.who knows, right?

the complaints about idzik are the handling of the corner position and not upgrading the oline. at least for me it is.everything else,i am fine with

IMO he simply has not looked that good.

I thought he looked pretty solid last season which is why I figured the Jes brought him back.  Really curious to see AA at the CB spot.

They brought him back because he is on a 4 year deal.  He's signed through 2015.  I think he looked okay.  I believe the board loved him for the same reason they hated MIlliner.  Expectations.  He seems okay.  It's not the end of the world if he plays, but I have not been particularly impressed with him.  He's still a younger guy and was undrafted, so he might have been expected to take some time to develop.
