NIGHT STALKER
POSTED 12:27 p.m. EST, January 28, 2006 NFL NETWORK THROWS WRENCH INTO TURKEY DAY The NFL Network is making its boldest move yet to force its way into every cable system in America. According to The New York Times, the league's official television station will carry eight regular-season games in 2006, starting with the Redskins at the Cowboys. On Thanksgiving. Though the game will be simulcast on broadcast channels in Dallas and D.C., the rest of the country will need to get their NTV before November or the only way folks will be watching Cowboys wrestling with other grown men on Thanksgiving is if they pick up a DVD of Brokeback Mountain. stormshadow19
Bloody hell... I can't get the NFL Network, since it's on digital cable here. This freakin blows goats. No Max, don't get any ideas. Eh, I needed to upgrade to an HD box, anyway.

Living in Florida, I just have to have my fix of NY sports and DirecTV gives me that...including the NFL Network channel.

Living in Florida, I just have to have my fix of NY sports and DirecTV gives me that...including the NFL Network channel. I haven't. It's not really an option. Especially since I'm a poor college student. It's a quick upgrade, through Comcast, and everything... but I'd love to get Direct TV, if only for the sports packages. SlugORama99
I've had Directv since last April and I would never go back to digital cable. It's worth it. Especially, if they add the new Mets-Jets Channel set to start in March/April.
BwanaZulia
This is actually what I came to talk about. What a bold "big balls" move by NFL Network (The NFL). I think we should start a petition as DirecTV Sunday Ticket clients, that they should lower the yearly price since we are now getting 8 less games a year. Not only that, I think as subscribers we should be able to have multiple packages to choose from. In other words, my prime game is the Jets...I'm not watching the other games that are broadcast at the same time...why should I pay for that? Well, maybe since the NFL Network now has some games the price package from DirecTV will come down...yeah right, who am I kidding.
RSJ
Wow this is a bad move by the NFL, imo. restricting the access to games to all of america will cost them fans in the long run.
Barton
Wow this is a bad move by the NFL, imo. restricting the access to games to all of america will cost them fans in the long run. I agree. And who will announce these games?
Scott Dierking
Wow this is a bad move by the NFL, imo. restricting the access to games to all of america will cost them fans in the long run. I imagine that the Network will handle the games just lik ethey did when TNT and ESPN started the Sunday night games (actually they still handle it this way)-When the home team market is playing, they will sell the game to one of the local affiliates as well. When they started pawning off the Sunday night games, cable penetration was not as deep as it is now. It won't have an effect on fans.

Well, maybe since the NFL Network now has some games the price package from DirecTV will come down...yeah right, who am I kidding. Fair point. I like watching football. But there'a point that the NFL might be hurting themselves with Directv ST customers. Since the NFL has loosened the blackout requirment and the Jets and Giants are always sold out, the NY area seems to get a doubleheader every week. We will get a game on ESPN on Monday and a game on NBC on Sunday. So that's 5 games out of 15 every week anyway, depending on bye weeks and such. Add in the Thursday opener, Saturdays in December, Thnakgiving and these new 8 games, and the NFL is practically begging you to cancel Sunday Ticket. Why pay $200 for basically the dregs of the schedule when the primo games figure to be either part of the free doubleheader on Fox or CBS or on NBC, ESPN or their NFL Network? Remeber-the NFL will allow NBC and ESPN and probably themselves to move games into primetime later in the season. Cannot imagine Directv is very happy about this either. The NFL Network is going to cannibalize their partnership with the NFL in ST at ST's expense.

I may be wrong.
Bugg
Think it's part their basic sport package, like YES or ESPN. It produces some things that appear on ST, like the 30-minute game thing they run on Monday and Tuesday.
BaumerJet
Funny thing about all of this - I PREDICTED SOMETHING LIKE THIS BACK IN '04 when the NFL NETWORK began! Just do not be surprised that later on, when the NFL reworks their contracts with both FOX & CBS that they take the last 5 Thursday nights of the Year after Thanksgiving, for an NFL game - Exclusively for the NFL NETWORK! Just think how much they can make selling the game to independant stations - just like ESPN will do with Monday Night Football!

The NFL Network said that this was a part of their thinking all along-To actually broadcast a limited number of games. It is the only smart thing to do to force their Network on all basic levels of cable.

I have Directv, but not Sunday ticket and I get the NFL Network. It's just part of the sports package.
