CFL kicker O'Mahony vanishes on way to new team

CALGARY, Alberta -- Duncan O'Mahony, a Canadian Football League kicker and punter, has vanished on his way to a new job with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, relatives and club officials say.

O'Mahony, 29, who played the past two seasons with the British Columbia Lions after three with the Calgary Stampeders, left his home town of Abbotsford, British Columbia, just north of Sumas, Wash., on Friday to fly to Winnipeg, Manitoba, after signing with the Blue Bombers as a free agent.

He planned to meet a friend for dinner during a stopover at the Calgary airport but never showed. When he failed to board his flight to Winnipeg, his baggage was taken off the plane, airline officials said.

Concern rose after he failed to appear Saturday at for the start of training on Saturday in Winnipeg.

Blue Bombers general Manager Brendan Taman said that in a telephone conversation Friday morning, O'Mahony "seemed all jacked up, ready to come" and asked who would meet him at the Winnipeg airport.

"I've been talking to his father quite a bit, and [Duncan] has had some issues he's been dealing with, [but] nothing that would warrant this kind of a situation, I don't think," Taman said.

O'Mahony was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, but grew up in Abbotsford and played football at the University of British Columbia, then spent three years with the Calgary Stampeders and two with the British Columbia Lions. He signed with the Blue Bombers last week as a free agent.

CALGARY -- After three days of uncertainty, Dr. Justin O'Mahony can now relax a little. His son, Duncan O'Mahony, missing since last Friday, telephoned home yesterday afternoon and said he was safe.

Where the 29-year-old Canadian Football League player is and what condition he's in were not released when the O'Mahony family issued a statement saying they'd heard from their son.

Instead, the family asked for privacy so they could "bring this situation to a close."

O'Mahony was en route to Winnipeg to attend the Blue Bombers' training camp when he left the Calgary airport during a brief layover. Family, friends and Blue Bombers officials were unable to reach him and concerns mounted as their search continued.

One person who wasn't surprised by O'Mahony's disappearance was former teammate Mark McLoughlin, who was brought out of retirement last season to help O'Mahony through a field-goal kicking funk with the B.C. Lions.

"Duncan's that type of guy," said McLoughlin, who also knew O'Mahony when they played for the Calgary Stampeders. "He's a free spirit. He wants to live within his own rules.

"He was probably out enjoying himself and now he'll have to deal with the consequences. He's never been afraid to do that."

O'Mahony's parents had yet to file a missing person's report before hearing from their son. It was acknowledged by the Blue Bombers that O'Mahony was "dealing with some personal issues," but they declined to elaborate.

O'Mahony was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, but raised in Abbotsford, B.C., where his father is a licensed psychologist. O'Mahony played for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and was the Stampeders' second-round pick in the 2001 Canadian college draft.

In 2001, his rookie season, O'Mahony helped the Stampeders win the Grey Cup. He eventually left Calgary in 2004 to sign with his hometown Lions. Although he was a reliable punter in 2005, he struggled when it came to kicking field goals.

Tired of his inconsistency, the Lions released O'Mahony this month. He admitted to friends he was disappointed about being let go, but was hopeful of a new start with the Blue Bombers.

Winnipeg general manager Brendan Taman said the team is putting O'Mahony's career on hold and is now looking for a new punter.

"Having him miss camp for four days without even knowing where he is, how do we know we can rely on him to get on the plane in Week 2 to go to Toronto to play against them, for example?

"The football career is definitely on hold for now and I think it will be on hold for a while."

Could he be suffering from the same thing as Barrett Robbins: Bipolar Disorder.
