124
49ers | Rice trying to retire with the team Mon, 17 Jul 2006 06:04:14 -0700 Dennis Georgatos, of the Mercury News, reports WR Jerry Rice wants to return to the San Francisco 49ers for a retirement ceremony, but details of the tribute are still being worked out with 49ers owner John York. If Rice signs a ceremonial one-day contract this year, it will have to be soon. Teams can afford a ceremonial spot on the bigger training-camp rosters, but not on the 53-man squad of the regular season. The 49ers are working on a fitting tribute, team spokesman Aaron Salkin said. "No details have been finalized, but there's no doubt the team wants him to retire as a 49er," Salkin said. "Not only the team but the fans."

aec4
This whole "retire as a XXXXX" is just BS. You retire for the last team you actually played for. I can't stand this ceremonial 1 day signing BS.

The Troll
I thought he officially retired about the time he became a ballroom dancer. If he does this, will this knock his HOF induction back a year?

No way. He's hands down the greatest receiver of all-time.

aec4
That's not what I meant. I believe it does not effect his 5 yr waiting period but I am not sure. I think the 5 yr period is from the time he files the papers.
