ESPN comment on Jets/Pats

That Pats-Jets game was no fluke. The Pats don't have any big-play guys and seem leery about giving Maroney the starting job because they don't want Corey Dillon to poison the clubhouse, which is exactly what would happen, even though he's so slow at this point that CBS decided to run two commercials during his 50-yard run last weekend. So they can only score with these elaborate 12-play, 80-yard drives where everything has to go perfectly -- no tipped passes at the line, no receivers falling down, no overthrows, no holding penalties, etc. -- or else the drive gets derailed. Through 10 weeks, they've only scored 24 points outside the red zone (one field goal, three TDs), the third-lowest total in the league. Everything's a chore for them, nobody can get open downfield and Brady is pressing because he feels like he has to be perfect on every play. And they still miss Charlie Weis. Just seems like they're easy to stop. Plus, the Jets are better than people think. The division race is not over

Maroney has big play potential but unfortunately Dillon was given a horrible extension following 2004.

Pats fans like to say the organization doesn't reward for past performances when they kill us on Martin (see Givens, Branch, Law, Adam V., Willie) but Dillon's extension was a mistake.

The coordinators that departed after 04 and 05 were also obviously much more important to the teams success than our resident Pats fans predicted.

The weak division and soft schedule the past two seasons is the only thing that has kept this team in any SB discussions.

Unless the NE secondary and WR play improve along with the offensive play calling over the remaining soft schedule, I see the same quick play-off exit as last year for NE.

Do you have the facts on Dillon's contract extension?

If you do, you would know the Pats can easily walk away from that contract after this season with minimal cap implications.;)

It's not like they gave a 31-year old RB a huge 7 year extension like the Jets did with CuMar.

How?

Patriots signed him to a tiered extension. The first tier ends after this year.

Signing a back coming off of a 1600 yard-12 TD season is bad how?

The Patriots did not sign a contract that would kill them. Do you remember Bledsoe was signed to a 100 million extension by Belichick? It was tiered to the point that the Patriots were able to move him a year after he signed it.

Dillon is in the same boat. His contract was structured to the point his judgement day comes after this year. He has a 3 million option that is out there as part of the remaining 3yr-15 million on the contract. Think he gets it? No. I would not mind if Dillon stays on board. Not at 5 millon per grant you, but at a rate this befitting of a short yard specialist like Bettis was for the Steelers.

For all the knocks the Patriots D has taken and I am not saying some of it is not warranted, they have still held the opponent to under 20 points in 8 of 9 games this year. That is not bad. The offense is th eonly thing keeping them from an 8-1 record.

If you want to knock them for losing Weiss and RAC go for it. Their time was due for HC positions. There was no one way they were going to replace that experience. However, they are 17-10 since Superbowl XXXIX and if they can get their flaws in order, there is no reason this young team could not see a return to the 34-4 run of 2003-2004. How many teams would love a 17-10 run over the past year and a half?

No one is knocking the Pats for losing their OC's....just pointing out they are missed despite you guys saying you wouldn't miss a beat.

Dillon is subject to opinion. I'd much rather Maroney as the feature back.

Is there a CAP hit on Dillon in 07?

I think that is the biggest knock on the Patriots offense this year. I think they need to switch to him for a majority of the carries. If that was him last week, he takes it to the house. :soapbox:

If Miguel's cap page is right, it is usually fairly accurate, his cap hits are 3.679 million the next three years.

As far as the OCs go, if the Jets did not steal Mangini we might be all right. ;-)

realistically pfskih, the pats are having a good year considering all that they have lost. It's a lot like what dallas had happened to them in the 90's. It's so hard to keep a great core together for long periods of time. The pats still have their qb, have a good rb that is getting old, but have his replacement, have solid d line and lb corp. All they are lacking is experienced wr's. caldwell is going to be real good. i've seen him play a lot.

The offense sucks because Brady is overrated garbage. It's pretty obvious now that his supporting cast was much better than people wanted to admit, and he was never asked to win a game by himself. Now that he's being asked to win games, it's obvious that he's not very talented. Brady is a noodle arm that can't win big games, the best he can do is not **** up. He will never be on Manning's level, if Manning was on the Pats they'd have won 4 straight SBs by now.

Exactly. It is impossible to keep everyone. As every dynasty in the past has prooven, keeping players too long is not the answer either. Are the Patriots contenders? Yes. Are they serious contenders? Maybe.
