PEORIA, Ill. - Former NFL player and Fox Sports broadcaster Bill Maas was charged with drug possession and weapons charges following a roadside safety check.

The 45-year-old Maas and a passenger in his Hummer, Sarah J. Murphy, 27, were arrested late Friday by Illinois State Police. During the stop, police indicated Maas seemed nervous, and he agreed to a search of his vehicle.

Police found a .22-caliber revolver, 5 grams of suspected marijuana, 6 grams of suspected cocaine and 28 pills of Ecstasy. Maas and Murphy were charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. Maas was also booked on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

"We didn't recognize him until about 5 p.m. this afternoon," Trooper Tony Halsey told the Journal Star of Peoria on Saturday.

Halsey said he had no idea why Maas and Murphy, both residents of Lee's Summit, Mo., were in the area.

They were taken to the Tazewell County Jail in Illinois and will appear for a bond hearing Sunday before a county circuit court judge.

Maas was drafted from the University of Pittsburgh by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1984, and was the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year. He was a two-time All-Pro selection. He played with the Chiefs until 1992 and joined the Green Bay Packers the following year.

Maas joined Fox in 1996. From 1998-01, he served as studio anchor and game analyst for NFL games. Last season he reported games for the network.

When you have a gun, weed, coke and ecstasy in the car it would not seem to be a good time to "agree to a search" of your vehicle. Bill Maas has 99 problems but a bitch ain't one.

He must have been high for carrying a .22 caliber wheel gun for "protection." In revolvers the minimum caliber is .38 Special, automatics is 9mm. Leave the can plinkers at home.

I don't want to make fun of you but only a Bengal fan knows the difference between a .22, .38 & a 9mm!

Hey! Don't make me pop a cap in yo' a$$!

Excellent response!

I've been to Cincy a couple of times and have no problems with the City. The only problem I have is that the airport is in Kentucky!

I know. I grew up a few miles down the road from the Greater Cincinnati International Airport, and even though it is indeed located in Kentucky, it's just a few miles south on the other side of the Ohio River. Fifteen to twenty minutes to Paul Brown Stadium by cab.

How far is it from LaGuardia (New York) to the Meadowlands (New Jersey)? It seems catching a Jets game is a two state affair as well!

BTW here's a pic of Maas announcing at a recent Bengals game. Probably scored some dope while he was there, don't ya think?

Ex Husker Sentenced for Assault

Alford given 15 to 20 years

Former Husker football player Eric Alford was sentenced Thursday to 15 to 20 years in prison in a child sexual assault case.

Alford pleaded no contest in May to charges of attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child.

In a plea deal, charges were reduced from first-degree sexual assault of a child. Alford's maximum potential prison sentence was reduced from 50 years to 20 years.

Alford, who is 34, was arrested in February when a 12-year-old girl told child welfare workers he had had a four-year sexual relationship with her.

Alford played tight end for Nebraska in 1993 and 1994.

Former Florida football player found dead

July 5, 2007

PORT ORANGE, Fla. (AP) -- Former Florida and Bethune-Cookman football player Avery Atkins was found dead in his car in the garage of his aunt's home Thursday in what police called a suspicious death.

The 20-year-old player could not be revived by paramedics, Port Orange police Sgt. Wayne Dorman said. Authorities would not release further details, and Dorman did not elaborate on why police consider this suspicious. An autopsy will be performed.

Atkins was a freshman cornerback on the 2005 Gators and was projected to start on the 2006 squad, the eventual national champion. He was released from his scholarship last summer by Florida coach Urban Meyer because of a domestic battery charge against him.

He joined Bethune-Cookman as a transfer and played in three games in 2006 before being released from his scholarship.

"We are saddened to hear the news regarding Avery," Florida coach Urban Meyer said in a statement. "We share our grief with the Atkins' family and those close to them."

Atkins attempted to rejoin the Gators this spring, re-enrolling at Florida while paying his own way. Meyer said at the time that wasn't enough to allow his return.

Atkins was arrested Monday and charged with possession of crack cocaine. He also was arrested in June when Daytona Beach police said they found him with cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a concealed weapon. He was charged in May with felony aggravated battery.

Last year, Atkins was charged twice with domestic battery on the mother of his child. He entered a deferred prosecution in both cases.
