Patriots | Team's defense remains one of league's most feared

Wed, 22 Aug 2007 21:46:14 -0700

Robert Lee, of the Providence Journal, reports the New England Patriots have allowed 17.74 points per game since 2001. That mark ranks the club third in the NFL over that span. Last year the team finished second in the league with a franchise record of 14.81 points allowed per game. The performance of that unit has continued through the beginning of the 2007 preseason, when the Patriots have allowed 16.5 points per game and have tallied 3.5 sacks per game. Part of the reason is likely that the team's defensive nucleus from last year is largely the same. "A lot of us have been around a while and we've been around each other a bunch, too, which is nice," LB Tedy Bruschi said.
